  1. Final Activities • Here are a few more activities or skills that parents can work on with their children at home: • Grouping items • Addition • Subtraction • Measuring items • Counting items • Telling Time • Finding Shapes • Sequencing Items • Biggest to smallest • Shortest to tallest • Making Patterns • ABAB pattern • ABCABC pattern • ABBABB pattern Starting Out at Home Parents need to start working with their child at home in order for their child to be successful in the classroom. There are many simple activities that parents can do with their child every day to build their math skills and prepare them for school. The first activity can be as simple as sorting out socks in the laundry and having the child find patterns in the different clothes. This activity helps them to sort and find patterns which are two key strategies that are necessary when solving math problems. Money Math Another activity is to pretend to set up a store in your home with your child and practice handling money. Many children have a difficult time counting and exchanging money when they get to Kindergarten. For this activity use real money: quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. Practice buying something that costs 26 cents, 40 cents, and $1.00 to show your child all of the different ways to make that amount using coins. You will also have to explain to your child the value or worth of each coin. “In the final analysis it is not what you do for your children but what you have taught them to do for themselves that will make them successful human beings.” -Ann Landers http://cdn.sheknows.com/articles/child-counting-change.jpg
