  3. It is not the tribulation. It is the despair when faced with suffering. Não é a provação. É o desespero diante do sofrimento.

  4. Não é a doença. É o pavor de recebê-la. It is not the illness. It is the horror in being ill.

  5. It is not the unfortunate family member. It is the sorrow of having this person in the family group. Não é o parente infeliz. É a mágoa de tê-lo na equipe familiar.

  6. Não é o fracasso. É a teimosia de não reconhecer os próprios erros. It is not the failure. It is the stubbornness of not acknowledging one‘s own mistakes.

  7. It is not the ingratitude. It is the incapacity of loving without selfishness. Não é a ingratidão. É a incapacidade de amar sem egoísmo.

  8. Não é a própria pequenez. É a revolta contra a superioridade dos outros. It is not our own smallness. It is the rebellion against the superiority of others.

  9. It is not the offence. It is the injured pride. Não é a injúria. É o orgulho ferido.

  10. Não é a tentação. É a volúpia de experimentar – lhes os alvitres. It is not the temptation. It is the desire of listening to its suggestions.

  11. It is not the ageing of the body. It is the passion for appearances. Não é a velhice do corpo. É a paixão pelas aparências.
