  1. Chapter 10.1: Energy Transformations and Conservation Google images

  2. Energy: ability to do work or cause change • All states of matter contain energy • A State is a form in which matter exist • Solid, Liquid, Gas • When heat is added to a system, the temperature increase. When heat is removed, the temperature decreases. If enough heat is added or removed, substances will change state. How does Heat affect a system

  3. Solid: definite shape and Volume Liquid: definite volume but no shape Gas: no shape or volume States of Matter

  4. When a liquid turns into a solid that is called Freezing. The temperature at which this change happens is called freezing point. If enough heat is added to the liquid, it can start to boil and turn into a gas. The temperature at which liquid boils is called the boiling point. Changes of State and Energy

  6. Why does adding heat cause particles to vibrate faster? HEAT IS THE TRANSFER OF ENERGY… this will cause a change in matter • There are two basic types of energy • Potential Energy • Kinetic energy http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/matter/energy-and-matter.htm Changes of State and Energy

  7. Potential Energy: energy that results from the position or shape of an object… or energy stored Kinetic Energy: energy that results from the motion of an object Types of Energy

  8. Potential + Kinetic = Mechanical Energy Mechanical Energy is associated with the position, shape, or motion of an object Types of Energy

  9. Nuclear Energy: is potential energy stored in the nucleus of an atom Thermal Energy: total kinetic and potential energy of an atom Electrical Energy: energy of electric charges Electromagnetic Energy: for of energy that travels through space in waves Chemical Energy: potential energy stored in chemical bonds, which hold atoms together What forms of energy are related to particles http://glencoe.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/dl/free/0078693896/160350/00076705.html

  10. All forms of energy can be transformed into another form of energy. This is energy transformation Single Transformation: one transformation at a time Multiple Transformation: a series of transformations How is energy conserved during a transformation http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks3/science/energy_electricity_forces/energy_transfer_storage/activity/

  11. Energy transformations • Law of conservation of energy • energy is neither created nor destroyed • Friction • Force that one surface exerts on another when rubbed against each other
