Designing & Making Considerations: Comment on the following points IN YOUR OWN WORDS. • Health & Safety: • How H&S is Strictly regulated by law – through HSE (Health & Safety Executive). • Handling sharp equipment with care – i.e. scalpel (knife) with metal safety ruler. • Using spraymount (aerosol glue) in a well ventilated area. Being aware of it being flammable and irritant. • Being aware of others working around you – not leaving things in the way. • Wearing suitable clothing. • Social Issues: • Could the product be offensive to someone? Does it insult someone? • Are there any religious, racial, or gender-related issues? • Have offensive symbols been used? • Is the any nudity, violence? • Could the words be offensive? • Could the images be offensive? • Are the manufacturing working conditions harmful to anyone? • Environmental Issues: • Using materials that can easily be recycled or are degradeable (rot easily) helps to preserve natural resources. • Fossil fuels that are burnt to produce energy (to operate machinery) cause pollution of the atmosphere. • The ‘Green’ alternative is to use ‘renewable’ energy sources i.e. solar and wind. • Industrial Design Practices: • Creating models/prototypes. • Testing prototypes – seeing how well they stand up to use. • Developing designs using CAD (computer aided design) – 2D Design, Adobe Photoshop software. • Printing artwork on EODs (electronic output devices) i.e. laser printer and sublimation printer. • Using CAM (computer aided manufacturing) – e.g. lasercutter.
