  8. GRAMMAR CONCEPTS (p. 58)Relative Clauses • The review sentences contained relative clauses which began with a relative pronoun. • A relative clause is used to describe a noun. • For example: Vilicus, qui cum praecursoribusequitabat, ad Salviumrediit. • The farm manager, who was riding with the forerunners, returned to Salvius. • In this example, the relative clause describes the farm manager. • Another example: Propeiuveneseratplaustrum, quodtotamviamclaudebat. • Near the young men was a wagon, which was blocking the whole road.

  9. GRAMMAR CONCEPTS (p. 59)gender • qui, quae, quod are relative pronouns and are given in their masculine, feminine, and neuter forms. (qui=masc., quae=fem., quod=neut.) • The terms masculine, feminine, and neuter refer to gender, & ALL Latin nouns belong to one of these 3 genders.

  10. GRAMMAR CONCEPTS (p. 59)gender & relative clauses • Examples: • Aquilaestanimus, qui* ad deosascendit. The eagle is a soul which is ascending to the gods. *Animus is masculine, so the masculine relative pronoun qui is used to introduce the clause. • Turba, quae* propeianuamstabat, ad terramprocubuit. The crowd which was standing near the doorway fell to the ground. *Turba is feminine, so the feminine relative pronoun quae is used to introduce the clause. • Plaustrum, quod* vides, rotamfractamhabet, The cart which you see has a broken wheel. *Plaustrum is neuter, so the neuter relative pronoun quod is used to introduce the clause.

  11. Let’s practice • Select the relative pronoun that correctly completes the sentence: a. qui b. quae c. quod • Senex,___puerosduxit, estGraecusservus. • qui puerosduxit • Femina,___puerumportabat, lenteambulabat. • quae puerumportabat • Plaustrum, ___fractasrotashabet, est in via. • quod fractasrotashabet

  12. Let’s practice • Select the word to which the relative pronoun refers: • Femina, quae puerumportabat, lenteambulabat. • Femina, puerum • Femina • Plaustrum, quod fractasrotashabet, est in via. • Plaustrum, rotas, via • plaustrum

  13. Let’s practice • Select the correct translation of quod. Choose a for because or b for which. • Puersenemducebat, quodclaudicabat (lame). • (a) because • Vinum, quodancillaeferebant, erat in pateraaurea. • (b) which

  14. GRAMMAR CONCEPTS (p. 59)gender & adjectives • As we have previously discussed, adjectives in Latin must also agree in gender (as well as number & case) with the nouns they describe. • For example: • Multosprincipesvidi. I saw many chiefs. • Multasfeminasvidi. I saw many women. In sentence 1, multos is accusative, plural, masculine to agree with principes. In sentence 2, multas is accusative, plural, feminine to agree with feminas.

  15. Translate the following • Sacerdoteseffigiemceratemportabant. • The priests were carrying a wax image/statue. • Rex fabroscallidoslaudavit. • The king praised the clever craftsmen. • ParvuspuerCogidubnum ad effigiemduxit. • The small boy led Cogidubnus to the image/statue.

  16. Looking ahead to the Stage 15 test • New concepts to be aware of: • Relative clauses and relative pronouns • Gender of Nouns and Adjectives (M, F, N) • Review Concepts: • Selection of Adjective which properly matches the noun it modifies (number, case, gender) • Choosing the correct noun (Acc. Or Abl.) to go with a preposition
