  1. Wreck diving is a subset of scuba diving that demands additional skill and delivers a rewarding experience for thrill-seekers. While it is also popular to investigate wrecked airplanes at the seafloor, the majority of wreck diving is done on shipwrecks, such as the Zenobia in the Mediterranean ocean, off the coast of Larnaca, in Cyprus. The story of how Zenobia met her fate at the bottom of the ocean floor. Zenobia, a Swedish roll-on-roll-off ferry carrying 108 trucks and trailers, sunk during its inaugural journey from Sweden to Syria in 1980, reportedly due to steering issues. According to data available on the history of the Zenobia, it was not operating properly, therefore the ship's captain decided to dock in Larnaca Harbour. However, minutes before docking, the ship engineers discovered a significant fault with the onboard computer system, resulting in water being poured into the ship's ballast tanks. The ship was subsequently pulled into deeper waters about a half-mile from Larnaca so that the engineers could attempt to resolve the problem, but it was listing to a 45° angle, thus it was concluded that there was nothing that could be done, and the rest is history. Diving Zenobia The Zenobia is still one of the most renowned shipwrecks in the Mediterranean Sea, if not the entire world, and divers from all over the globe would visit Cyprus merely to get a glimpse of or explore this beautiful dive site while scuba diving. Due to its proximity to the coast, rich marine life, and easily accessible depth for recreational diving, diving Zenobia has become a favourite hobby for many divers. She went down to a maximum depth of 42 meters of sandy seafloor. This is perfect for both technical rebreather diving, as well as technical divers, but also suitable for side mount diving for beginners. The top of the Zenobia can easily be reached in only 16 to 17 meters of water because it has sunk to its port side. The wreck's lowest and maximum depths are excellent for both experienced divers and novice divers who have just finished their open-water training. Full penetration or entry into the belly of the ship is also possible with technical rebreather (or Tecrec) and technical diving on air, but it is only recommended on guided diving trips with a reputable diving center in the region.

  2. Is diving Zenobia dangerous? If you follow the rules and guidelines, then no, diving Zenobia is not dangerous. Divers are, however, warned not to swim beside or under the trucks that may still be seen clinging to the Zenobia, for safety reasons, since they can weigh more than 40 tonnes and are kept in place by chains that are continuously losing strength. For some years, all of the windows in the main superstructure have been shattered. Wreck diving is very popular among scuba divers. The experience, which mixes diving and magnificent aquatic life with history and archaeology, is simply unrivalled and many diving centers in Cyprus offer both experienced and beginner divers a variety of affordable dive packages that also include diving Zenobia. Naturally, nearly every diver who goes on a wreck dive expedition secretively wishes to uncover some type of artifact or undiscovered treasure, but the truth is, there is nothing quite like exploring a submerged wreck, such as the Zenobia, especially when it has become a new habitat for marine life. Diving Zenobia often leaves divers with an enormous feeling of wonder and reverence, and many remember the dives for the rest of their lives. Another reason wreck diving is so fantastic is that it can be quite a hard drive, especially for beginners who have never done this sort of diving before, and for many divers, it is also a matter of ticking something off their bucket list.
