Currently does not have a masters degree. But he plans to being a masters program in 2017.

  6. Educational Experience Shelsea Chilumuna interviews Marsalis Charles. IDM 288. • Did you have any internships or co-ops while you were at mercer? • 1. I interned at The Department of Defense at the Naval Warfare Center in Virginia Beach, VA. Prior to my arrival at Mercer my duties were to test, scan and multiple objects with the 3D Scanner then have the objects printed(3D Printer). (Dr. Rhada should have one of the pieces). I also assisted in assembling and testing multiple hand held radios that were being used in the Iraq war. Completed hand held radio testing (Helicopter to Radio communication before being shipped • 2. My second Internship was completed at Blue Bird Fort Valley, GA while attending Mercer. I completed Time Studies at their manufacturing facility on multiple machines and welding processes. I used Draft sight to create floor layout designs to improve process flow and helped position a new machine within the manufacturing facility without disrupting production. I also assisted in the role out of Manger Plus software that helped with the maintenance of the machines and scheduling for repairs when needed

IDM 288. • What is your routine on a normal work day? • On a normal travel day I have a conference call between 5-8am depending on the time zone and type of business call (multiple facilities around the world). Arrive at the facility around 6:30 am. I have a corporate staff meeting in the morning on the objectives and action items for that week (30min). I then head to the shop floor “Gemba” to meet with the cell leaders and operators (taking key notes and data analysis). If during the week I traveled to be part of a Kaizen event, I would meet with team members and begin dividing up the work. I then work on the Kaizen throughout the week and usually get off around 7:00pm. If I’m not traveling I am working on multiple individual projects and get off work between 4-6:00pm. I can also work from home time to time as well depending on

IDM 288. • Are your benefits and compensation competitive with those in similar industries? • Yes • How many hours are on average do you work a week? • 50 hrs on avg. The most he has worked has been 90 hours a few times in a week • How much free time do you have when you leave work? • If traveling about 2 hours, if at home about 6 hours downtime before bed

IDM 288. • Do you usually work on weekends • Rarely • How often do you interact with people outside the engineering world? • 3 days a week if I’m lucky • Are you required to make presentations and write reports as part of the job? • All the time it can be on the fly or scheduled. Not to many reports • Is your work experience what you expected it to be compared to before? • Felt he was prepared, even though never worked in aero space industry. Toured Warner Robins air force base while at mercer so it helped him grasp what was going on.

IDM 288. • Do you usually work in groups or alone? • Both • What's a stressful aspect of job and what is a satisfying aspect? • Stressful- Dealing with the board (CEO, CFO), having to present to them in short notices. Satisifying- completing major project and seeing evidence difference is made. • Have you had any mentors who were influential in helping you grow in your profession? • Has one at his job, helping him go down the career path he wants • How much room for advancement is there in the company? • Plenty • Is traveling a requirement of the position, if so how often? • Yes, he travels around 70% this year, 40% last year

IDM 288. • What has been your career path since graduation • Industrial role transitioned to PXP role to Black Belt Certification then Masters Degree • Has your family life influenced your career path? • Aunt worked at Warner Robins Air Force Base which he was able to tour for a day • What made you change your specialty in engineering? • Either learning towards the healthcare sector or the aerospace industry due to stability of the market over the years • If given the opportunity, would you go back in time and change your major or specialization? • No, glad Dr. Burtner helped him switch from mechanical to industrial. The flexibility allows him to market himself to many jobs in the industry • Where do you see yourself 5-10 years from now? • 5 years- completed black belt certification, masters degree, and in a manger role of one of main stream product lines • 10 years- wants a position on the board to provide innovative ideas to drive our company in right direction
