  3. Intro • Tsar Peter westernized Russia • Created secular schools • Had tutors for Gentry sons who could not marry until they completed a certain level of education • Focused on growing his army • He wanted Russia ready for anything

Frederick I • Jul. 11, 1657-Feb. 25, 1713 • Reigned1701-1713 • First king in Prussia • Married 3 times • 2ndwife (Sophia Charlotte of Hanover) is mother of Frederick William I • Nov. 16, 1700, Austria and Prussia have secret agreement to crown Frederick I as king of Prussia • Austria and Prussia remain allies through War of Spanish Succession (1701-1714)

Frederick William I • Aug. 14, 1688-May 31, 1740 • Reigned 1713-1740 • Married Sophia Dorothea • Helped stabilize society and economy • Freed serfs • Encouraged farming • Abolished hereditary leases • Levied additional taxes in Prussia and Lithuania • Created yearly taxes that replaced aristocracy’s feudal war service • Insisted on primal education • Didn’t believe in finery • Was frugal • Left his son an efficient and centralized state • Fun Fact: was mean and didn’t like his eldest son Fritz (Frederick II The Great)

Frederick II the great • Jan. 24, 1712-Aug. 17, 1786 • Reigned from 1740-1786 • Married to Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Bevern • Determined to use the army his father left him • “I must enlighten my people, cultivate their manner and morals, and make them as happy as human beings can be, or as happy as the means at my disposal permit.” • After Seven Years’ War (1763), Frederick’s government promoted the reconstruction of agriculture and industry in his war-torn country

Problems Frederick II Faced • Invaded Saxony, starting 7 Years War • Other countries were plotting against him • Only had Great Britain for an ally • Wanted to commit suicide because he was a loser • Peter III helped him out • He was enemies with Austria • He made it hard for Austria to exchange the Netherlands for Bavaria
