Reaganomics • Reagan’s plan for tax and spending cuts • Two goals • Reduce taxes to stimulate economic growth • Cut the federal budget • Based on supply-side economics • Raising tariffs to increase the number of imports • Growth in the economy would occur when corporate business taxes were reduced • Used to justify tax cuts for business • Successful in lowering taxes on personal and business income

The Camp David Accords that freed the hostages in Iran (Carter) and the Persian Gulf War both shows a desire of the United States to create stability in the Middle East

  10. NAFTA • On January 1, 1994 the North American Free Trade Agreement took effect. • Under the NAFTA, Many tariffs were eliminated between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico • NAFTA was meant to stimulate the economy by encouraging increased free trade

  11. NAFTA • NAFTA was also expected to reduce migration from Mexico into the United States because: NAFTA was expected to raise wages in Mexico, reducing the incentive for migration.

  12. Opponents of US immigration • Immigrants reduce wages of American unskilled workers • Immigrants use social services that could be reserved for non-immigrants • Immigrants should be restricted to those with high skill and high wealth

More Scandal in the Whitehouse • During the grand jury investigation, Bill Clinton lied under oath regarding his personal relationship with Whitehouse intern Monica Lewinsky • Clinton continued to deny the relationship until evidence of the relationship was brought to light. • Many demanded that the President be punished for committing perjury.

  14. Impeachment • On December 18, 1998, the U.S. Congress voted to impeach the President. • The United States Senate did not vote to impeach the President and he remained in office.

Successes of the Clinton Presidency • The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) was passed by the Clinton administration • Interest rates were drastically reduced on loans, allowing for more people to affordably borrow money for the purchase of homes and cars. • Welfare programs were reformed so welfare recipients would not receive assistance for more than two years and required people to work to receive benefits.

  16. Successes of the Clinton Presidency • By raising income taxes and taxes on fuel, Clinton was able to overcome the national debt and create a budget surplus
