Recent Technological Developments • GPS: Greater accuracy, reduced cost, waypoints displayed real-time in a GIS software; • Satellite Imagery: Higher resolution, positional accuracy, 3-day revisit frequency, and GIS-readiness; • Mobile GIS: Capture, manipulate, analyze and visualize data in the field in real time; • Combination with DV:Better integration.

Geo-coding System • A unique code needs to be assigned to each EA example:02 025 0115 0033 Province: 2 digits District: 3 digits Locality: 4 digits EA: 4 digits • This Code: a natural link between GIS boundaries (geographic coordinates) and tabular census data  Geo-code • Coding system: well structured, flexible  Geo-coding System

Digital Census Mapping Process vs Traditional Census Mapping Process • Digital Census Mapping Approch: common sense! • Paradigm Shift: • Up-to-date Approach • Continuous Mapping Process • Implications: reconsider the way to conduct censuses (periodicity of census, frequency of inter-censal surveys, coverage, etc.)
