What is backflow?Backflow is the reversal of water flow in the opposite direction of it’s intended flow. When this happens, it presents a BIG problem.
This can allow any contaminants in your home or business’ water line, to flow back out into the main water supply – contaminating the source of our drinking water.
Backflow occurs as a result of a “cross-connection” within the water system, which exists when there is any actual or potential connection between a potable water system and any other source or system through which it is possible to introduce any used water or other substance into the potable system.
There are many cross-connection hazards – For example, imagine having one end of your garden hose connected to your homes water system and the other end is resting in a bucket full of pesticides.
Then while the hose is still resting in the bucket of pesticides, there is a breakage in the main water supply or a fire hydrant is opened down the street.
Either of these events can cause a reverse of water flow, causing the pesticides to be pulled through the hose and back into the main water supply – contaminated the drinking water for everyone in the nearby area. What a nightmare this can cause.
Thankfully, there’s such a thing as a “Backflow Prevention” system. A backflow prevention device, does exactly what it sounds like it does. It prevents the backflow of water from our homes and business’ from being able to return back into the main water supply.
The back flow prevention device is usually located right where the main water enters your home or office, preventing any potential contaminants in your water lines from contaminating your neighbors water as well.
Having the backflow prevention device in your home or office tested annually is the responsibly of whomever the water bill is addressed to. Failure to have your backflow prevention device tested annually can result in suspension of your water service and/or fines from the local water authority.
If you have any questions about backflow testing or would like to schedule an inspection, please don’t hesitate to give the backflow experts at Robison & Robison Services a call. http://www.rrservicesllc.com/
