It looks like Old Man Winter has finally decided to make his presence known in Northern Virginia and the surrounding areas. With the mild winter we’ve had thus far, it’s easy to forget to keep ours homes protected against Winter’s icy touch. Below, are a few tips to help you avoid some of the havoc these low temperatures can cause.
Insulate pipes in unheated areas, such as attics, crawl spaces and basements – Pipe insulation can be purchased at most hardware store and is fairly easy to install • Close the indoor shut-off valves to your hose spigots and open the outdoor spigots to allow water to drain – This will prevent water in the line from freezing and bursting the pipe
Remove all garden hoses from outdoor hose spigots • When below-freezing weather is forecast, open cupboard doors in the kitchen and bathrooms. This allows these pipes to get more heat from inside your home
