What is EBP? • Why is it important? • Are any NAMI programs EBPs? • What’s new at NAMI? • Q&A
What is EBP? • Clinical research shows that a treatment produces positive outcomes • The treatment has been shown effective in repeated studies • The studies have been published in peer-reviewed journals
What kind of positive outcomes? • Symptom reduction • Prevention of need for intensive, more restrictive services • Fewer hospital admissions • Less expulsions from school • Better quality of life
Examples of EBP therapies • CBT – Cognitive Behavior Therapy • CET – Cognitive Enhancement Therapy • DBT – Dialectical Behavior Therapy • EMDR – Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing • Multisystemic therapy
We have a right to know - • There is more to psychotherapy than just “talking” • There is more to using medication as a treatment component than just writing a prescription • Not every healthcare professional has expertise in every type of therapy
How do I know if a program is EBP? • NREPP – National Registry of Evidence Based Programs and Practices – suspended spring 2018 • Evidence Based Practices Resource Center https://www.samhsa.gov/ebp-resource-center
