5. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE LATE WORKING Some Definitions (Little France) “HOURS OF EXPECTED BUILDING OCCUPANCY” All those other than: • Weekdays from 18:00 to 07:00; • Weekends from Friday at 18:00 until 07:00 on Monday; and • University and public holidays.

HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE LATE WORKING OUTSIDE HOURS OF EXPECTED BUILDING OCCUPANCY THERE ARE … • Very likely to be fewer people available to support the work that’s to be done; • Fewer, if any, who might witness a problem and be able to respond; and • Few, if any, emergency support staff (Fire Wardens, First Aiders, etc).

7. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE LATE & LONE WORKING The Downside • Working late, and for prolonged periods of time, can leave us unfit and more susceptible to illness. • Working late can create stress and tension (perhaps well downstream of the work being done).

8. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE LATE & LONE WORKING The Downside • Working late can make a person less competent, and may compromise both safety and efficiency (theirs and that of others). • Working late can have a detrimental impact on a person’s family and social life.

9. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE LATE & LONE WORKING So, it’s important to keep your working hours within sensible boundaries … for health, professional and personal reasons.

10. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE LATE & LONE WORKING Some More Definitions HIGH RISK ACTIVITIES • Where RA explicitly prohibits work out-of-hours and/or on a lone- working basis. • CL3 work. • Controlled radiation area work. • High risk manual handling. • Fumigation.

11. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE LATE & LONE WORKING MORE HIGH RISK ACTIVITIES • Work involving flammable solvents (>200ml). • Work within Controlled Area of the biomedical MRI. • Any other work specifically prohibited out-of-hours or on a lone-working basis.

12. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE LATE & LONE WORKING Late working in LN2 plant rooms is permitted on an exceptional basis, and with the explicit permission of the relevant Principal Investigator. Lone working in LN2 plant roomsis very strictly forbidden.

13. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE LATE & LONE WORKING Local Rules • There may well be other restrictions, applicable at a local level, with which you will be expected to comply. • This is one more reason why it is important for you to speak beforehand with your PI/Lab Manager.

14. But always remember to log out when leaving. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE LATE WORKING Logging In/Out • Log kept at Reception in all UofE buildings on the LF/BioQ campus. • Late working may be registered at any time during a normal working day. • Log in upon arrival at any other time.

15. Regardless of who you are and whatever others may (or may not) be doing. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE LATE WORKING Logging In/Out • On each and every occasion that you are working outside hours of expected buildings occupancy.

19. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE LONE WORKING Some More Definitions “LONE WORKING” • People working separately from others. • Only one person working on the premises. • People working outside hours of expected building occupancy? • But quite possible also during normal working hours.

22. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE LATE & LONE WORKING Never be in a position as a lone worker where you would not have ready access to a means of calling for help, and be sure always to know what to do in the event of an emergency.

25. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE LATE & LONE WORKING Practical Implications • Complete a lone working risk assessment, and ensure that it is properly endorsed. • Obtain explicit permission from your Supervisor. • Absolutely no high risk work. • Report problems.

HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE LATE & LONE WORKING More Practical Implications • Inform your Supervisor of any illness or condition that might have a bearing on your capacity to work alone safely. • Conform to all generic and local H&S rules. • Individual emergency actions are essentially the same as during normal working hours.

Specific hazards should be assessed on a separate risk assessment form and cross-referenced with this document.
