  1. How to get your kids to work? How to make them make you and your class a priority!

  2. First ask yourself: Are there consequences for your students when they don’t work? Are you alerting them and their parents that they aren’t working? Do you remind them they need to submit work on a weekly basis through every means of communication: phone, texting and emailing? Are you available to your kids when they reach out for help? Do you accept their excuses?

  3. Seeing Red? Non-working students should get one email from you weekly-don’t bombard them with emails but one will warn them in writing they are not working and can be suspended. You need to cover yourself. Find kids in the red in VSA and send them a message there and also in educator Pick one day of the week each week to send non-working email-should be after Monday since most kids submit work on Mondays and should be sent before Friday-can change each week Email should be very specific with what date it is, when there work is due by and the consequences for not submitting their work Good practice is to send email and give it 1-2 days before calling; will help to eliminate some calls as many kids will get on and submit work Call twice and log calls in VSA before suspending to Student Success Center

  4. Email to non workers Dear wonderful student, If you are receiving this it is because I am noticing that I have not received any work from you in the last 1-2 weeks as of today, Wednesday, February 8. This of course breaks my heart :-( Please submit a minimum of 3-4 new assignments this upcoming week. Please let me know if I can help you in any way! :-) I would hate to have to suspend you for not working. If your work is not submitted by Sunday, February 12, you will be sent to the Student Success Center which is the first step in the withdrawal process. If still in your grace period and not staying on track I will be forced to withdraw you with no grade. Working weekly is a requirement to stay active in the course so let me know how I can help!!! :-) Mrs. Nikki Foley-Gilbert, M.Ed.

  5. Always having the same conversation? Why? If a student is not working weekly send the email each week, follow through with calls and suspend. Don’t have time to call non workers? Turn it into a monthly call  Many students will submit their work if consequences are spelled out in email and on voicemails.

  6. Was your message clear enough? Did you say “I want to see if you need help, I miss your work, call me when you can” Or “I miss your great work and if you don’t submit your lessons by Sunday I will have to suspend you from the class which can be the first step in the withdrawal process. Please don’t let this happen and call me right away so I can help you get back on track.” You will see results with the last one.

  7. I’m nervous they will yell at me  You can still leave a very nice message about a very serious and sometimes unpleasant topic-like suspension or withdrawal. Parents and students will not be upset if you are consistent in your warnings-they don’t want to wake up and see they are suspended or withdrawn with no warning. But if you have been warning them both over the phone and in writing they will be understanding Its our job to help students and be there for them-yes we are patient and forgiving but there is a difference between giving a student a second chance and being taken advantage of. You can’t be a doormat-there are lots of kids that need us and we need to have students that want to be in our class and are willing to do their part. If they no longer are willing to do that-we need to do our job and follow FLVS procedures to open that seat up for a student that is ready and willing to work.

  8. Why this needs to be a priority Putting the time in on non working students will lead to less suspensions, ssc plans, and withdrawals. Will increase your completion rate and yield Will help increase student/teacher, parent/teacher contact which will be reflected in your survey data=kids will know you are monitoring them and trying to help them Will help kids to be successful and earn their course credits

  9. Questions Please feel free to reach out to me anytime! Nikki Foley-Gilbert 904-466-0457 nfgilbert@flvs.net
