CENTER FOR FINANCIAL EDUCATION A Christian approach to money management
Mission Statement • To educate families in responsible money management from a Christian perspective.
Case for Change • One third of all households in the nation are unable to pay for their basic needs on a regular basis. • Poverty leads to many other problems such as divorce, isolation, depression and many times abuse. • Half of all marriages today end in divorce. Over 2/3 of those state financial reasons as a chief cause.
Providing the basic necessities will continue to cost more over the next five years. • Government programs will continue to provide less and less services due to cost. • Without including our faith we are only putting a band-aid on a problem. • Over 50% of the people in NW Iowa are less than 1 paycheck away from homelessness.
Preferred Future • No divorce would be based solely on financial difficulties • No healthy relationship would end because a family could not resolve financial issues
All families would have enough resources to provide for their needs Families would have time and energy for their spiritual life
Community members will be concerned and compassionate for those who are experiencing unexpected financial problems
A young couple was referred to CFE by a local bank. They were not happy to be here because they did not see the value of the services CFE can provide. During the first couple of appointments they were obviously unhappy and uncomfortable with the situation.
However, they did agree to follow the beginning plan set for them. By the fourth visit they were excited because they were seeing progress in their debt being reduced. That excitement and encouragement is continuing as they are learning to use their resources God’s way.

Our Success Plan • Classes Budgeting Saving Investing Giving
Clients Meeting one-to-one Providing guidance Assisting with creditors Developing a budget
Demonstration Project Meeting with DHS, legislators, and community leaders Develop a demonstration for the HOPE Loan to allow families to meet emergency expenses, learn the loan process, obtain positive credit history, and stop the cycle of hand-outs instead of Hand-ups
Our Goals • To help clients help themselves and enable us to be proactive rather than reactive. Also to be more efficient by working with more than one family at a time • To change the mindset/expectations; to focus on the future; to make wise God honoring financial decisions • To help families get out of the poverty system by providing a means to meet unexpected emergency expenses, to learn how to apply and receive a loan, to obtain a positive credit history
How We Measure Our Success • Through classes we can make more effective use of time and reach more families • By adding staff hours we are able to serve more families • The demonstration project will incorporate a new approach to services that will improve the quality of services offered.
