  1. Brian Donnelly Using the Semantic Web to solve the problem of integrating multiple spreadsheets

  2. We show how Semantics lets business users integrate two - or several hundred – spreadsheets through an entirely graphical approach. • We give concrete examples of problems solved in Drug Research, Imaging, Project Management and Brand’s 327 EPA spreadsheets. • This approach opens up opportunities for business users to create sophisticated solutions for themselves, quickly, and at low cost.

  3. “How can I fuse together/join/merge these two spreadsheets without cutting and pasting for hours?” • I want to end up with the extra columns for Ellen Abel added on to the right hand side of her record … • But there are 41,000 Zip Codes, and hundreds of Employee records, so …

  4. SDS automatically generates a Semantic Model of the two spreadsheets –joining means highlight attributes • We get the extra columns for Ellen Abel added on to the right hand side of her record … • Under the hood this is all done with OWL and SPARQL but the business user doesn’t see this

  5. Scientists need to do this at Industrial Strength - once you go beyond two spreadsheets it gets very tough … • Try and match 890,000 x 130,000 x 18,000 rows – it cannot be done ‘by hand’ – but that’s all people have • So people cannot ‘reach’ all the important discoveries they need – see the solution in the SDS video

  6. Now this scientist wants to add query of images – still using spreadsheets she assembles to her order … • This Semantic approach lets her build powerful queries entirely on her own – no long IT projects in the way • The images live on a remote server, the descriptive metadata on her desktop …

  7. “Project Management has multiple plans plus risk/issue spreadsheets – how to get a high level view?” • Hundreds of columns in each of the 15 Projects with risks/issues dispersed in 30+ spreadsheets • Need to know allocations and issues across ALL projects to form a view of overall organisational risk …

  8. SDS automatically connects to all of this data and generates this high level view of just the key concepts • The 15 Projects are ‘stacked on top of each other’ so that you can drill down through all of them at once • Now we can identify the set of all the time that key resources are allocated at an overall level

  9. Brand Niemann has a new category of problem – 327 EPA spreadsheets contain valuable data, but … • How can we simplify this problem by leveraging the symmetry between them … • Like the Project plans, we ‘stack’ the similarly shaped spreadsheets on top of each other …

  10. Now we have ‘stacked’ 20 spreadsheets into 3 inter-related ‘pancakes’ and can compare across all of them • All 327 would ‘fit’ in about 10-15 concepts …

  11. We have built SDS to deliver a lot of productivity to hard pressed business users solving frequently seen problems • There is no need for any understanding of Semantics – we think adoption requires a ‘Mind Manager’ level of ease of use. • Very happy to help make this real for you in short proofs-of-concept Brian Donnelly bdonnelly@SemanticDiscoverySystem.com www.SemanticDiscoverySystem.com
