  2. KANSAS VOLUNTEER COMMISSION • KVC’s mission is to serve, engage and empower • Housed in Kansas State Department of Education • Offer small and large grant opportunities • Manage AmeriCorps Kansas program • Support mentoring organizations through Mentor Kansas

  3. KANSAS VGF • Fund effective approaches that expand volunteering • Strengthen the capacity of volunteer organizations • Develop strategies to solve problems using volunteers • Capacity building grants to volunteer agencies • Service Enterprise Initiative (SEI) coming soon!

  4. FUNDING HIGHLIGHTS • Capacity building grant for volunteer program • Eligible volunteer agencies only • Programs must operate in Kansas • Request between $10,000 - $15,000 • October 1, 2019– September 30, 2020 (12-months) • Must have a paid staff member dedicated to supporting volunteers for at least 50% of their job. • Application materials due Monday, July 1 by 4:00PM

ELIGIBLE ORGANIZATIONS • Public or private nonprofit organizations • Faith-based and other community organizations • School districts • Institutions of higher education • Government entities within states or territories (e.g., cities, counties) • Labor organizations • Partnerships and consortia • Indian Tribes

VGF KANSAS IDEAS • Hire a consultant to provide specialized training to volunteer managers in your area. • Develop a volunteer engagement task force around rural volunteering. • Develop a marketing plan to increase volunteerism using billboards, PSA, or social media advertisement. • Buy software to track volunteers in your service area. • and MORE!

  7. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES • Supplement versus supplant • Religious activities • Political activities • Non-domestic service activities/beneficiaries

  8. GRANTEE REQUIREMENTS • KVC trainings (September 27 and January 29) • VGF community calls with KVC • Submit reports (April and October 2020) • Submit financial reports monthly for reimbursement • Include CNCS and KVC logo on materials • Collect and report on volunteer numbers

BUDGET REQUIREMENTS • 50% Match of Total Grant • Cash or in-kind • Non-federal funds • Identify source • Use of funds • Project development • Personnel and fringe • Supplies • Training needs • Background checks • Printed materials • Advertisement fees • Record-keeping fees • Consulting fees • Travel

  10. BUDGET • 12-months • Recommend to minimize number of staff on grant • Add travel for 2 KVC trainings in Topeka • Add background checks - charged to grant or match ($70/staff) • Describe matching funds (cash or in-kind or both) • Describe source of matching funds

  11. UNALLOWABLE EXPENSES • No more than 10% for recognition items • No equipment more than $1000 • No volunteer payments or stipends • No gift cards

  14. BUDGET BEST PRACTICES • Check calculations • Write out equation (100 shirts x $10 = $1000) • List source of matching funds • Ensure items in budget are discussed in narrative

  16. APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS • Save application as a PDF. • Save as [Insert Organization Name] VGF Application. • Must send signed W-9. • Deadline is 4:00PM on July 1, 2019. • Email materials to volunteer@ksde.org.

  17. NARRATIVE BEST PRACTICES • Create narrative in Word then paste into application. • Spell check and proofread before submitting. • Answer the statements listed and number responses. • Write out acronyms before using abbreviations. • Use 12-point font

  18. GRANT REVIEW PROCESS • Grant review committee • 2 KVC staff, 2 KVC Commissioners, 1 external reviewer • Goal is to recommend funding to KVC and the Commission • Clarification questions • Created by grant review committee • Requested information in order to make an informed decision

APPLICATION TIMELINE July 1 Applications due by 4:00PM July 2 – July 12 Applications reviewed July 15 - July 26 Clarification period July 26 Clarification responses due August 12 Tentative notification of awards September 13 Official notification of awards September 27 Grantee training in Topeka October 1 Grantee start date
