  1. Combining Like Terms How to simplify Variable Expressions

  2. What are like terms? In variable expressions, like terms are those that have the same variable raised to the SAME power! In fractions, like terms are those that have the same denominator. 2x + 3x + 4 + 2 + 5

  3. What about terms that look alike? BE CAREFUL!!!!! Terms must have the same exponent to be combined. Example: 2x can NOT be combined with 4x2 Why not?

  4. Find the Like Terms -x2 + 5x = (-4) + (-3x) + 2 -5x2 – x + 8 + 6x – 10 -3x2 + 2x + x2 – 4 + 7x

  5. But how do I combine? Steps for Success! Isolate the terms Combine all the terms in ORDER of the exponent variables -3x2 + 2x + x2 – 4 + 7x

  6. That was easy! What comes next? The distributive property MUST be completed before terms can be combined. Be CAREFUL! Only distribute the quantity right next to the parenthesis! In this expression5(x + 3) + 7 only the 5 gets distributed!

  7. Your Turn! 2 (x + 3) + 3 (5 - x) 3 (y + 2) – 4y (x + 2) –2 (1- x) -x2 + 5x +x2

  8. The DREADED CRCT 2X Find the perimeter of this rectangle X - 7 X - 7 2X

  9. The Real Life Situation It takes 50 minutes to get where you are going, You can spend t minutes riding the subway at an average speed of 0.5 miles per minute. The rest of the time you spend walking at a rate of 0.05 miles per minute.

  10. Individual Practice PWB Section 2.7 Homework: Page 111 #39-52 ALL 1: I’m so confused? 5: If I do the homework I can figure it out 10: No PROBLEMS!!!!
