  8. A Mighty Fortress is our God 1. A mighty fortress is our God, A trusty shield and weapon, Our faithful helper in all need, Our stay, whate’er may happen. The old evil foe Now means deadly woe; Deep guile and great might Are his dread arms in fight; On earth is not his equal.

  9. A Mighty Fortress is our God 3. Though devils all the world should fill, All eager to devour us, We tremble not, we fear no ill, They shall not overpower us. This world’s prince may still Scowl fierce as he will, He can harm us none; He’s judged, for e’er undone; One little word can fell him.

  10. A Mighty Fortress is our God 4. The Word shall stand despite all foes - No thanks they for it merit - For God is with us, and bestows His gifts and Holy Spirit. And take they our life, Goods, fame, child, and wife: Though these all be gone, Yet have our foes not won; The kingdom ours remaineth. †

  12. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION C: We confess that we are born in bondage to sin And cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, By what we have done And by what we have failed to do.»

  13. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION We have not loved you with our whole heart, And we have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. We deserve your eternal punishment. »

  14. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, Have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

  27. FIRST READING R: The first reading for the fourth Sunday after Pentecost is written in the nineteenth chapter of 1st Kings beginning at verse one. 1 Kings 19:1-15a CEV Elijah flees and meets God

  28. 1 Kings 19:1-15a Ahab told his wife Jezebel what Elijah had done and that he had killed the prophets. 2She sent a message to Elijah: "You killed my prophets. Now I'm going to kill you! I pray that the gods will punish me even more severely if I don't do it by this time tomorrow.”

  29. 1 Kings 19:1-15a 3Elijah was afraid when he got her message, and he ran to the town of Beersheba in Judah. He left his servant there, 4then walked another whole day into the desert.

  30. 1 Kings 19:1-15a Finally, he came to a large bush and sat down in its shade. He begged the LORD, "I've had enough. Just let me die! I'm no better off than my ancestors." 5Then he lay down in the shade and fell asleep.

  31. 1 Kings 19:1-15a Suddenly an angel woke him up and said, "Get up and eat." 6Elijah looked around, and by his head was a jar of water and some baked bread. He sat up, ate and drank, then lay down and went back to sleep. 7Soon the LORD'S angel woke him again and said, "Get up and eat, or else you'll get too tired to travel.”

  32. 1 Kings 19:1-15a 8So Elijah sat up and ate and drank. The food and water made him strong enough to walk forty more days. At last, he reached Mount Sinai, the mountain of God, 9and he spent the night there in a cave.

  33. 1 Kings 19:1-15a While Elijah was on Mount Sinai, the LORD asked, "Elijah, why are you here?" 10He answered, "LORD God All-Powerful, I've always done my best to obey you. But your people have broken their solemn promise to you.

  34. 1 Kings 19:1-15a They have torn down your altars and killed all your prophets, except me. And now they are even trying to kill me!" 11"Go out and stand on the mountain," the LORD replied. "I want you to see me when I pass by.”

  35. 1 Kings 19:1-15a All at once, a strong wind shook the mountain and shattered the rocks. But the LORD was not in the wind. Next, there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. 12Then there was a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire.

  36. 1 Kings 19:1-15a Finally, there was a gentle breeze, 13and when Elijah heard it, he covered his face with his coat. He went out and stood at the entrance to the cave. The LORD asked, "Elijah, why are you here?" 14Elijah answered, "LORD God All-Powerful, I've always done my best to obey you. But your people have broken their solemn promise to you..

  37. 1 Kings 19:1-15a They have torn down your altars and killed all your prophets, except me. And now they are even trying to kill me!" 15The LORD said: Elijah, you can go back to the desert near Damascus. And when you get there, appoint Hazael to be king of Syria This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God .

  38. Psalms 42 and 43 CEV R: The Psalm for today is Psalm 42 and 43 1As a deer gets thirsty for streams of water, I truly am thirsty for you, my God. C: 2In my heart, I am thirsty for you, the living God. When will I see your face?

  39. Psalms 42 and 43 CEV R: 3Day and night my tears are my only food, as everyone keeps asking, "Where is your God?" C: 4Sorrow floods my heart, when I remember leading the worshipers to your house. I can still hear them shout their joyful praises.

  40. Psalms 42 and 43 CEV R: 5Why am I discouraged? Why am I restless? I trust you! And I will praise you again because you help me, C: 6and you are my God. I am deeply discouraged as I think about you from where the Jordan begins at Mount Hermon and from Mount Mizar.

  41. Psalms 42 and 43 CEV R: 7Your vicious waves have swept over me like an angry ocean or a roaring waterfall. C: 8Every day, you are kind, and at night you give me a song as my prayer to you, the living LORD God.

  42. Psalms 42 and 43 CEV R: 9You are my mighty rock Why have you forgotten me? Why must enemies mistreat me and make me sad? C: 10Even my bones are in pain, while all day long my enemies sneer and ask, "Where is your God?”

  43. Psalms 42 and 43 CEV R: 11Why am I discouraged? Why am I restless? I trust you! And I will praise you again because you help me, and you are my God.

  44. Psalms 42 and 43 CEV C: 1Show that I am right, God! Defend me against everyone who doesn't know you; rescue me from each of those deceitful liars. R: 2I run to you for protection. Why have you turned me away? Why must enemies mistreat me and make me sad?

  45. Psalms 42 and 43 CEV C: 3Send your light and your truth to guide me. Let them lead me to your house on your sacred mountain. R: 4Then I will worship at your altar because you make me joyful. You are my God, and I will praise you. Yes, I will praise you as I play my harp.

  46. Psalms 42 and 43 CEV C: 5Why am I discouraged? Why am I restless? I trust you! And I will praise you again because you help me, and you are my God C: Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and will be for ever. Amen.
