  1. KEY CONCEPTUnifying themes connect concepts from many fields of biology.

  2. Objectives for section 1-2 (page 8) • Explain what characteristics all organisms share • Elaborate how the levels of life have systems of related parts • Relate structure and function in biology • Describe homeostasis in organisms • Specify how evolution unifies all living things and its relation to biodiversity.

  3. All organisms share certain characteristics. • Biology is the scientific study of all forms of life.

  4. An organism is any individual living thing. • All are made of one or more cells (1). Fig 2.1 Leaf hairs

  5. An organism is any individual living thing. • All need energy for metabolism (2).

  6. An organism is any individual living thing. • All respond to their environment (3). • Stimulus causes response Response: removal of burnt hand Stimulus: hot stove

  7. An organism is any individual living thing. • All have DNA (blueprint) that they pass on to offspring (4).

  8. All levels of life have systems of related parts. • System is an organized group of interacting parts. • A cell is a system of chemicals and processes. • A body system includes organs that interact. • An ecosystem includes living and nonliving things that interact.

  9. Biologists study many different systems.

  10. Structure and function are related in biology. • Structure determines function. • Proteins with different structures perform different functions. • Heart muscle cells have a different structure and function than stomach muscle cells. • Different species have different anatomical structures with different functions.

  11. Organisms must maintain homeostasis to survive in diverse environments. • Homeostasis is the maintenance of constant internal conditions.

  12. Homeostasis is the maintenance of constant internal conditions. • Homeostasis is usually maintained through negative feedback. • Negative feedback systems return a condition to its normal (set) point.

  13. Behaviors and adaptations can help maintain homeostasis.

  14. Evolution explains the unity and diversity of life. • Evolution is the change in living things over time. • Genetic makeup of a population of a species changes. Misconception!!

  15. Evolution cont. • Can occur through natural selection of adaptations. • Adaptations are beneficial inherited traits that are passed to future generations.

  16. Evolution accounts for both the diversity and the unity of life.

  17. Quick Quiz Time  • Each question will be worth 2 points • You may NOT talk and/or communicate with a classmate • Scores will be collected and recorded at the end of the chapter

  18. 4. Which of these characteristics is shared by all living things? • They are made up of one or more cells • They make their own chemical energy • They have similar responses to light • They reproduce when one cell divides into two

  19. 5. The basic using of life is • The cell. • An atom. • DNA. • A species

  20. 6. At all levels of life, when related parts interact to form a whole, they form a • Biosphere • Species • Cell • system

  21. 7. The maintenance of constant internal conditions in an organism is known as • Homeostasis • Negative feedback • Structure specialization • adaptation

  22. 8. Which aspects of life on Earth are accounted for by evolution? • Diversity and unity • Interaction and conflict • Lack of genetic and physical change • Differences of structures and function

  23. 9. A beneficial inherited trait that is passed on to future generations is called a(n)? • Stimulus • Adaptation • System • Homeostasis

  25. 4. Which of these characteristics is shared by all living things? • They are made up of one or more cells • They make their own chemical energy • They have similar responses to light • They reproduce when one cell divides into two

  26. 5. The basic using of life is • The cell. • An atom. • DNA. • A species

  27. 6. At all levels of life, when related parts interact to form a whole, they form a • Biosphere • Species • Cell • system

  28. 7. The maintenance of constant internal conditions in an organism is known as • Homeostasis • Negative feedback • Structure specialization • adaptation

  29. 8. Which aspects of life on Earth are accounted for by evolution? • Diversity and unity • Interaction and conflict • Lack of genetic and physical change • Differences of structures and function

  30. 9. A beneficial inherited trait that is passed on to future generations is called a(n)? • Stimulus • Adaptation • System • Homeostasis
