  3. Nomad • A person that does not have a permanent home and travels from one area to the next to meet basic needs.

  4. Isolated Civilizations (cause of) • City-states developed in Greece because of MOUNTAINS • Europe has lots of mountains • this prevented villages from joining each other because travel is difficult

  5. North European Plain • Large plain across Europe • Provides good soil for agriculture

  6. Polders • Land that is below sea level but is reclaimed through the use of barriers that control the inlet and outlet of water • Reclaimed land

  7. Mediterranean Europe • Area around the Mediterranean Sea: • Spain • Italy • Greece

  24. Population Changes in Europe • Europe is the smallest continent and has 1/8 of the world’s population • This population density is changing because Europe has Negative Growth • There are not enough babies being born to replace the people dying

  26. Life Expectancy • The average age that a person in a given population can expect to live to

  27. Fertility Rate • The average number of births • Low fertility rate means less babies; high fertility rate means lots of babies

  28. Pension • The fixed amount of money paid to a retired person by a government or former employer • money to provide for retired persons
