Bad effects of sunlight • In the previous chart, we noticed that sunlight can cause: • Skin cancer • Sunburn • Skin damage • Premature wrinkles • Eye damage
What are some ways to protect your skin from the sun? • Limit time in the sun during 10 am and 4 pm • Be in the shade as much as possible when outdoors • Wear a hat and sunglasses when outside • Wear sunscreen on exposed skin (at least 15 spf) • When possible, wear a shirt with long sleeves
What are your experiences with the sun? Turn and talk • Have you ever had a sunburn? • Why do you think your skin burns? • Sunburns are your body’s signal to inform you that your skin is getting too much sun • When do you wear sunscreen? • What type of protective clothing do you wear when outdoors?
Protective Clothing Activity • Oh no! Mary woke up late and needs to pack for her trip the pool. • What are the best choices for Mary to help protect her skin?
Protective Clothing • Now that we have discussed ways to protect our skin, we will now identify create an item that can protect our head, face, and ears when outdoors. • We will make a sun safety hat.
Sun Safety Hat • Fold your paper into fours • Draw an arc from one side of the folded paper to the other edge
Sun Safety Hat • Cut along the line and open your circle. • Write at least 5 things that can protect your skin while outdoors. Be specific! • For example: I will wear sunscreen while at baseball practice. I will reapply the sunscreen after 30 minutes intervals.
Sun Safety Hat • When finished, cut a line to the center of the cone.
Sun Safety Hat • Overlap the cut edges to form a cone. • Using a glue stick, glue the edges together.
