  1. Optimizing Sub-Surface Infrastructure Albuquerque, New Mexico October 1, 2005

  2. Mission Statement Help people gain access to safe, sustainable water and wastewater sanitation through the responsible and resource-efficient use of PVC pipes and fittings.

  3. How important is it to select the right pipe product?

  4. Water & sewer main breaks are costly.A single break can easily cost $100,000 or more.

  5. Fort Worth, Texas – 6/23/05

  6. Concrete Pressure Pipe Failure

  7. Pikesville, Maryland – March ‘0436” Pipe Failure – 120,000 Homes

  8. Selecting the best pipe can provide substantial long term cost savings and minimize adverse environmental impacts.

  9. It's All About Sustainable Service

  10. Sustainable Service • Defining it • Designing it • Delivering it

  11. Fewer breaks = Substantial $avings

  12. Calgary water main installation.

  13. 2004 Update from Roy Brander • Calgary has installed nearly 2,000km of C900 PVC, now almost half of their system. • A similar length of metallic distribution mains sustains over four hundred repairs per year, with associated costs over 300 times higherthan the infrastructure management budget for a similar amount of PVC. • The PVC break rate is so low that the usual unit of breaks/100km/year has become unwieldy, needing decimal places when engineers prefer small integers.

  14. 2004 Update from Roy BranderBreak rates for various pipe materials in units of (breaks / 1,000km / 10 years). • Poly-wrapped ductile iron: 3,000 – 4,000 • “Yellow” ductile iron: 300 – 350 • PVC pipe: only 13 – 17

  15. PVC Pipe = Lower Maintenance + Longer-life Durability No corrosion - inert No linings or coatings Easier to install Safe / clean Lower costs
