  1. Post Secondary OptionsProgram Strongsville High School

  2. Enrollment Options • Option A-Enroll for College credit and high school credit (family pays) • Option B-Enroll for High school and College Credit-No charge for course, books, or materials

  3. Amount of Credit • High school credit is based on number of hours student spends in class-Carnegie Units • College credit is based on “credit hours” • 5 semester hours at college equals one high school credit • Students may take no more hours at college than the number of credits they’d receive at high school • Students at SHS may earn 7 credits/yr therefore may take a maximum of 35 semester hours at college

  4. Grades • PSO Courses are counted in students GPA • Honors and courses 200 level or above are weighted • Therefore PSO courses can affect class rank and GPA

  5. Transportation • Transportation to and from college courses are the responsibility of the student • Free/Reduced lunch students may qualify for transportation cost reimbursement

  6. College Responsibilities • Provide books, materials and fees • Support and counseling services available to traditional college students also available to PSO students • Transcripts of grades sent to HS after books are returned • Orientation for PSO students MAY be offered

  7. Student Responsibilities • Complete all applications/testing, etc required by colleges • Return all books and materials at end of course • Transcript of grades to SHS • Maintain contact with SHS regarding graduation responsibilities • Attend required classes/exams at SHS • Take Ohio Graduation Test

  8. ADVANTAGES • Take courses not offered at SHS • “Sample” college atmosphere • Earn college credit while earning high school credit

  9. DISADVANTAGES • SHS schedule cannot be altered to fit college schedule • GPA can be affected • Students who fail or drop college courses may be charged for those courses by the Strongsville School District • Graduation requirements cannot be waived for PSO students • 14-18 year olds will be in classes with much older students • NOT all colleges accept PSO courses for credit • Some colleges will not grant college credit for any college course receiving high school credit

Timeline • March 30-notify SHS of intent to participate • End of May-apply to colleges, take placement tests AND maintain contact with SHS counselor to complete college forms AND request SHS transcript for colleges • May-August-Complete college schedule AND bring copy to SHS counselor • End of first semester-Grades to SHS counselor

  11. A successful PSO student must be… • Responsible • Capable of juggling a variety of assignments and requirements • Willing to maintain contact with SHS

  12. Tri-C Requirements • 9th and 10th grade: 3.5 Cumulative GPA • 11th and 12th grade: 3.0 Cumulative GPA • Student must pass both the Math portion as well as the English portion of the COMPASS (or have a 20 ACT in English and a 21 in Math). • Student must have no less than a B (3.0) in any subject matter they wish to pursue

  13. Cleveland State Requirements • 3.4 Cumulative Grade Point Average • Minimum ACT scores of 22 on each section with a composite of 22, OR minimum SAT scores of 520 on each section (1040 total) • 9th grade applicants only under special circumstances

  14. Baldwin Wallace Requirements • Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better • ACT Composite of 24 or combined SAT Critical Reading and Math of 1100. • Seniors may enroll in up to 3 courses per semester • Juniors may enroll in up to 2 courses per semester • Students are not guaranteed enrollment

  15. LCCC-Midpoint Requirements • 9th grade: 3.9 GPA • 10th grade: 3.7 GPA • 11th grade: 3.5 GPA • 12th grade: 3.0 GPA • Must complete the Compass Assessment or have gotten the following ACT scores: 18 English, 21 Reading, 22 Math
