  13. Reinforce the Theme How do the photos on page 18-19 connect to the Theme Question: How is science a part of our community? How do you get to places in our community? What other things do people use to get from one place to another in our community? Why are these things important?

  14. Introduce Theme Vocabulary Pollutionissomething that harms and dirties the environment. Example: Black or brown smoke going up into the air is pollution. Ask: What is another type of pollution that you have seen? Transportation is the ways of moving people from place to place. Example: Cars are a type of transportation. Ask: What kind of transportation carries a lot of people at one time? Review: Plans – Drawings or diagrams that show where things go. Technology – The tools and machines we use that help people do their jobs well.

We learned the problem- that Tasha’s puppy chewed a big hole in her favorite shoe. What happens in the middle of the story? What happens at the end? What did Tasha learn?

  21. Write a First Draft Forgetful Freddie and the Play Mrs. Gray told the class they would be putting on a school play. Everyone was excited. But Forgetful Freddie was worried. He had to play the part of the king, but he wasn’t good at remembering lines. Freddie wanted to do his best, so he practices his lines with his friend Carla every day. Each day Freddie remembered more and more lines. The day of the play came. When it was Freddie’s turn to talk, he didn’t say a word. (How should we end the story?)

How is science at work in a garden? -How does creating a neighborhood garden connect to our Theme Question: How is science a part of our community? Look at pages 22-23: Transportation is a part of science. What do these photos remind you about science in our community?

  25. Use Context Clues • Look for clues in the text to find the meaning of a difficult word or phrase. • Author’s might use synonyms, antonyms, or examples to help them figure out the meaning of the word. Use page 23 and model using the word power. Use page 16 to practice using the word changes.
