  1. 123 SEE Paragraphs1 Statement, 2 Examples, 3 Explanations • STATEMENT a topic sentence that states a paragraph’s main idea. • EXAMPLES, also known as supporting sentences, strongly support the topic sentence and form the support every paragraph needs to have. Whenever possible, directly cite a published source to provide the necessary examples to support your paragraph’s topic sentence or statement. • EXPLANATION sentences (closing sentences) bring our paragraph to a logical conclusion by clearly explaining how the cited examples strongly support and prove the topic sentence.

  2. 1 Statement, 2 Examples, 3 Explanations • Statement: People use water a different way. • Example: When I wanted to take a bath, I had to heat up water and pour it in by hand in order not to freeze. • Explanation: Because people don’t have warm water going through their pipes, all water has to be warmed over the stove. • Now one more example, and explanation to explain it, and one more explanation how or why or when people use water in a different way.

  3. Your Turn: • Write 2 supporting paragraphs on: (choose one only) • Did the princess kill her lover or not? Why or why not? • Would Squeaky make a good coach? Why or why not? If any time left over, write an opening and closing paragraph

  4. Example • Statement: Jazz and Antonia have a lot of things that are similar about their personalities. • Example: “I don’t know which one of us was angrier,” (178), described the emotions when they both found DiLeo had tricked them into thinking they were both counseling the other. • Explanation: They both felt that emotion of embarrassment and betrayal. • Example: Another example of an understanding between them was: “I could see why Jazz was angry,” (107). • Explanation: Antonia was able to empathize with Jazz because of how untrusting her mother was. Jazz had just finished telling Antonia about the time her mom had called the cops because she had been late for dinner. • Explanation: Jazz and Tone are both able to relate and understand each other.
