  1. 5.3 Add, Subtract, and Multiply Polynomials

  2. Add Polynomials Vertically or Horizontally • Find the sum of the polynomials below: • 2x3 – 5x + 3x – 9 and x3 + 6x + 11 Vertically • (a) 2x3 – 5x2 + 3x – 9 + x3 + 6x2 + 11

  3. Horizontally (ex) 3y3 – 2y2 – 7y and -4y2 + 2y – 5 3y3 – 2y2 – 4y2 – 7y + 2y – 5 3y3 – 6y2 – 5y – 5

  4. Subtract Polynomials • Vertically • (ex) Subtract 3x3 – 2x2 – x + 7 from 8x3 – x2 – 5x + 1 Write a parenthesis around the second polynomial and distribute the minus sign.

  5. Practice Problems • Page 346 (1-3)

  6. Multiply Polynomials • Multiply -2y2 + 3y – 6 and y – 2 • Write parenthesis around the polynomials and use foil method.

  7. Multiply 3 Binomials • Multiply x – 5, x + 1, and x + 3. • Use foil method to solve. • Choose two of the three binomials to use foil method with. This will create a trinomial. • Use the other binomial to multiply to the created trinomial.

  8. Special Product Patterns

  9. Examples of Special Patterns • (ex) (3t + 4)(3t – 4) • (ex) (8x – 3)2 • (ex) (2x + 5)3

  10. Practice Problems • Find the product. • (1) (x + 2) (3x2 – x – 5) • (2) (a – 5) (a + 2) (a + 6) • (3) (xy – 4)3
