  2. Congratulations to a Successful Launch of theCJK NACO Project

  3. Background Information Summer of 2006 • LC’s Jiping Wu first approached UC Berkeley for the possibility of joining the CJK NACO Project. • The response was positive from Berkeley with strong support from the Director and the cataloging staff, but the timing was not ideal. • EAL had staff turnover and was in need of recruiting new catalogers. • Additional supporting staff will be needed to commit to a full scale of CJK NACO project.

  4. CJK NACO Member Application • Prof. Shuyong Jiang contacted Berkeley again in November 2006 to check if Berkeley was ready to join the CJK NACO Project. • At the time, a EAL Technical Services Task Force was reviewing all aspects of technical services operations to be implemented in the new C. V. Starr East Asian Library. The Task Force recommended that Berkeley should participate fully for authority control for all CJK titles. • An application was filed in November 2006 and became one of the initial members.

  5. Factors • Berkeley acquires between 13,000 to 16,000 volumes of CJK materials annually including the Japanese government depository items. • Berkeley created a few thousand original CJK records annually and would be an important contributor to CJK NACO project. • In 2006, Berkeley contributed over six thousand original cataloging records because of some special projects.

  6. CJK NACO Attractions • LC librarian is leading the project. Voice of suggestions and ideas can be easily communicated. • No quota requirement. • CJK NACO Project can focus on CJK specific needs, such as provide CJK scripts for names , find better solutions for group of names with same spellings. • As an official group, we can make suggestions to CJK publishers to include authors’ information in their publications. • Free and professional training : It’s an excellent opportunity to train independent contributors for all CJK catalogers. Berkeley plans to train a minimum of two contributors for each language.

  7. New Library, New Vision

  8. Target Dates

  9. Future of CJK NACO Project • Member’s voice and participation will be an important force to implement future enhancements. • Keep up with CJK NACO by being a member of the future CJK NACO Listserv. • Work together for current and future CJK specific issues, concerns and solutions.

  10. Many Thanks
