Psalm 101 in Context • David was king of Israel. • In 2 Samuel 6, David resolved to bring the ark of the Lord to Jerusalem. • Israel under the direction of Hophni and Phinehas, the sons of Eli, lost the ark to the Philistines. (1 Samuel 4) • The Philistines returned the ark to Israel (1 Samuel 6) • The ark is placed in the home of Abinadab (1 Samuel 7) • Abinadab’s house rested upon a hill. (2 Samuel 6:3) • David decided to transport the ark on a new ox cart. (2 Samuel 6:3)

Psalm 101 in Context • Ahio and Uzzah, the sons of Abinadab, were leading the ark. • The ark became unsteady upon the cart and Uzzah reached out touching the ark to steady it. • God struck Uzzah dead. (2 Samuel 6:7) • The Bible describes Uzzah’s actions as irreverent or error. • David’s reactions: • Emotion #1: anger against the Lord. (2 Samuel 6:8) • Emotion #2: fear of the Lord. (2 Samuel 6:9)

Psalm 101 in Context • “How can the ark of the Lord come to me?” • David’s sin was not a willful one. • David sought to draw near and to praise God. • How can One so Holy dwell near man? • In time David came to realize: • God’s presence is a blessing. (2 Samuel 6:12) • Why Uzzah died. (1 Chron. 15:2; 15:13) • David asks, “When wilt Thou come to me?” (Psalm 101:2) • Lesson: GOD MUST BE APPROACHED IN MANNER THAT GOD PRESCRIBES. (Ref. 1 Samuel 6:19-21)

  5. Psalm 101 in Context • Psalm 101: • David declares the type of principle that he will possess in order to draw closer to God. (vv. 1-4) • David declares the type of people that will guide his government closer to God. (vv. 5-8) • We are not worthy to approach God on the basis of our own merit. • Will we resolve to live by God’s principles? • Will we resolve to abide with God’s people?

(Psalm 101:1) • David resolved to praise God’s perfect qualities: • Lovingkindness • Mercy (NKJV) • Love (NIV) • Steadfast love (ESV) • God is worthy to be praised based upon His LOYALTY to man. (Eph. 1:4; Eph. 1:7; Romans 5:6-8) • Justice • God is worthy to be praised based upon His perfectly JUST nature. (Acts 10:34; Romans 2:11; John 12:48) David resolved to draw near to god and praise God’s perfect attributes. Psalm 101:1 --I will sing of lovingkindnessand justice, To Thee, O Lord, I will sing praises. Ref. Psalm 139:1-24; Will we resolve to go to the house of worship? Will we honor God in song and prayer? If we are to possess the type of relationship with God in 2012 that David did in his day, then we will worship the Lord. (Hebrews 13:15; Hebrews 10:24-25)

  7. David’s Resolutions for a Holy Life: • DAVID RESOLVED TO PRAISE GOD. (Psalm 101:1) • DAVID RESOLVED TO FOLLOW GOD’S GUIDANCE. (Psalm 101:2) • David would give heed to the blameless way. • God’s way is the blameless way. (2 Samuel 22:31)

Giving Heed to the Blameless Way: • Implies Two Things: • A knowledge of God’s word. • 2 Timothy 2:15; 1 Timothy 4:13-16; • A determination of let God’s word direct our lives. • “I willbehave wisely in a perfect way. Oh, when will You come to me? I willwalk within my house with a perfect heart.” • David was not committed to just showing up and worshipping, but to live and apply God’s word. • Will we glorify God in a manner of spirit and truth? (John 4:23-24; 2 Cor. 7:1)

I will walk within my house in the integrity of my heart. • Derek Kidner: “Both blameless and integrity contain this root idea, as of something which no corruption or compromise is allowed to eat into.” (Tyndale Old Testament Commentaries, page 358) • If only David kept this promise: • 2 Samuel 11, 13, 15; 1 Kings 1; • Will we commit ourselves to do what is right before those who know us the best and love us the most?

(Titus 2:2; Titus 2:6;) • Not over reacting, but keeping passions under control. • To manifest a sober mind through sound speech. (Titus 2:8; Eph. 4:29) • To live in a way that inspires and demands respect. (Titus 2:7) • To live in a way that manifest patience. (Titus 2:7) • Men, what will we do when times get tough? Will we manifest a resolve to serve the Lord???

David hated that evil and pledged himself not to place any idol before him as an object to be worshipped or adored in any sense.” • David will not put wickedness before his eyes with a view of doing it. David would no plan or purpose to commit wickedness. (Romans 13:14) • Robert Turner: “we are not to plan our associations, where we go, what we wear to fulfill some fleshly lust” (Reading Romans, page 100)

(Psalm 101:3) • David resolved to hate sin. “I hate the work of those fall away…” • A difference between the Christian who sins and the impenitent unbeliever who sins: • The Christian realizes that he is “poor in spirit” because of sin. (Matt. 5:3) • The Christian mourns sin and its adverse effect on life. (Matt. 5:4) • David would not accept the values of those who fall away.

(Psalm 101:3) • David resolved to hate sin. “I hate the work of those fall away…” • David would not flirt with or fellowship sin. “It shall not cling to me.” • David would not lust after evil (1 Cor. 10:6). • David would not tempt the Lord (1 Cor. 10:9). • Will we test the Lord by deliberately placing ourselves in the devil’s snare and then insisting on God’s deliverance?

They will see God (Matthew 5:8), not as the Jews at Sinai, but in the full understanding of an intimate relationship with Him (John 3:3-5; John 14:7-9).” • Will we be pure in heart and see the full value of a relationship with God?
