  1. Morality In The Bean Trees The Bean Trees, by Barbara Kingsolver, is a romance novel about a young woman named Taylor Greer and a Cherokee child placed in her care whom she names Turtle. The unlikely pair find a home in Tucson, Arizona, where they meet people who are instrumental in helping them build a life there. Lou Ann, a new mother, and Mattie, a nurturing woman who owns a tire shop, become some of the pair's closest friends. Throughout the novel, Kingsolver calls into question the morality of the government through characters who are attempting to find a new home in the United States. Turtle, along with Esperanza and Estevan, a married couple who are immigrants from Guatemala, share a past of abuse and trauma. Over the course of the novel, the characters are eventually helped by their newfound friends and family who bend the rules of both society and government in order to guarantee their safety. Kingsolver uses examples of characters breaking the law in favor of their consciences to display the benefits of prioritizing morality over legality; in this way she demonstrates that morals are more important than blindly obeying the law. Turtle is protected and helped by many friends throughout her early life which conveys that the morality of helping a person in need can be more valuable than obeying the law. Taylor chooses to take in Turtle as her own after she discovers the trauma the young girl had been through in her first home. 2. The Bean Trees Essay The Bean Tree   Write a composition based on the novel you have studied discussing the basis for and impact of individual choices. What idea does the author develop regarding choices? Living is about making choices. The choices people make shape their lives for better or worse. Even the decision not to choose has its effects, often not wanted. But the individual who chooses to make positive choices and to act accordingly is more likely to see his or her life reflect his or her beliefs and desires. Usually the individual who chooses to take action is also willing to face the risks and obstacles that such choices involve. "The Bean Tree," by Barbara Kingsolver, is a warm, funny story about a...show more content... There appears to be no hope of Taylor adopting her without the permission of Turtle's family. Because Taylor loves and can not imagine losing Turtle, she turns to Estevan and Esperanza as her last hope. Feeling that she has no other choice, she asks them to help her by posing as Turtle's parents and signing the adoption papers. Although there is risk involved for them too, Estevan and Esperanza agree without hesitation to do so. If they get caught, however, Taylor will lose everything she wants. Turtle will be taken away and so will Estevan and Esperanza, since they are in fact illegal immigrants. Circumstances have forced Taylor to face some difficult decisions, but her upbringing and strength of character help her move forward. Despite some moments of hesitation and self doubt she makes her choices with full knowledge of what she is doing and why. Being neither her real mother or legal guardian, if Taylor gets caught Turtle will certainly be taken away from her and put into the custody of foster parents. But, if she does nothing she will lose Turtle anyway. In the same way, she agrees to take Esperanza and Estevan to Oklahoma. Before she makes this decision too, she knows there is much risk involved. If she does not help them move on from Arizona they are likely to be deported, and could face death in Guatemala. But she is breaking

  4. The Bean Trees Essay The Bean Trees Differences in Characters In "The Bean Trees," by Barbara Kingsolver, readers are given the chance to see how two characters that have completely different lifestyles come together and deal with everyday problems, family relationships, and motherhood. Lou Ann chose a lifestyle that would cause her to get married, have a baby and move away right after high school. On the other hand Taylor did everything in her power not to end up living that lifestyle, and...show more content... Eventually Taylor motivates Lou Ann to have self–confidence and try hard to get a job and she notices differences in her character "I was liking Lou Ann a great deal these days. In a few weeks since she started working she had begun to cut her hair far less often... having a job seemed to even out some of Lou Ann's wrinkled edges. Motivation and support played a big role in creating these characters personalities. The reader really gets to see the difference in characters and also how combining the personalities changed their lifestyles. Family relationships played a big role in creating these characters. Lou Ann and Taylor both came from small cities in Kentucky but they were raised differently. Lou Ann moved to get married and raise a family but her mother disapproved for the wrong reasons, "she disliked him because he was Mexican P26" Taylor never wanted to live the lifestyle that Lou Ann had Taylor's mom said "barefoot and ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  5. The Bean Trees Analysis Throughout The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver, Marietta "Missy" Greer goes through many changes. For example, she changes her name to Taylor, adopts a child, and experiences life– changing events. When she left Pittman County, she probably did not expect to have a family that she avoided having in the beginning. Taylor left her home in Kentucky because she did not want to end up like all the other girls who did not finish school, got married early, and did not have much to look forward to in life. Taylor wanted a better life for herself so she left and made a new life in Tucson, Arizona. Some significant items that changed Taylor's life along the way were Lou Ann's ad in the newspaper, a photo of her with Estevan after Esperanza's suicide attempt, and Turtle's custody documents. These items are very meaningful because they play an important role in Taylor's new life Lou Ann's ad in the newspaper is sentimental to Taylor since they become great friends and family. When Taylor arrived in Tucson, she did not know anyone besides Mattie and felt lost. The difference between Kentucky and Arizona is clear when she says, "In Tucson, it was clear that there was nobody overlooking us all. We would just have to find our own way" (Kingsolver 63–64). In Pittman County, everyone knew each other and is a bit nosy, but in Tucson, no one talks to her or is interested in what she is here for. Seeing Lou Ann's ad and deciding to move in with her and Dwayne Ray was a decision that will ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  6. The Bean Trees Essay Author use many symbolism in the book The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver. She uses symbolism because it makes it easier for readers to understand the deeper meaning or feeling of the character or the events that are happening. For example, author uses the symbolism of bean trees as transformation and Ismene as the abandoned children to show the deeper meaning of them. "Turtle was staring up at the wisteria flowers. "Beans," she said, pointing... We looked where she was pointing. Some of the wisteria flowers had gone to seed, and all these wonderful long green pods hung down from the branches. They looked as much like beans as anything you'd ever care to eat." (143–144). This quote is important because it's the moment where the life of...show more content... Also Kingsolver uses Ismene to show the corruption of the government. "Our mouths opened and shut and we froze where we sat. I suppose we could have honked and waved and it wouldn't have raised any more pandemonium than this poor mother already had to deal with but instead we held perfectly still. Even Turtle, after a long minute or two the quail got her family herded off the road into some scraggly bushes" (96). The birds are significant symbolism in this book. They often appear in the book to symbolize Turtle; Kingsolver did this to show Turtle is a strong survival instinct child. First, when Taylor took Turtle to doctor and discovered that she has been abused and raped. As she makes this discovery, she sees a bird nest on a cactus. This shows that Turtle, in spite of her surroundings she keep persists. Also, when Turtle met the robber, a sparrow got caught in Lou Ann's house, the bird getting scared shows the Turtle's confusion and fright. But sparrow survives and leaves the house; this shows that even though Turtle is going through confusion she will survive. Finally, the quote shows the moment when Lou Ann and Taylor found a family of birds on the road. This quote symbolizes how Turtle is satisfied with her small family, feel safe, and she is happy. In conclusion, Kingsolver uses the symbolism to show the deeper feeling or meaning of each character, or the ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  7. The Bean Trees Don't Be Too Serious Let's say that someone handed you something unexpected. It could be anything: a computer, book, even a guitar! However, what if it was something of great value? What if it was a baby that was handed to you? Odds are, you'd probably freak out and hand the baby over to the authorities or something similar to that. But not Taylor Greer in the novel The Bean Trees! The words that Barbara Kingsolver chooses to use show a tone of informality and humor. One way Kingsolver establishes an informal tone is by using long, run on sentences and everyday words. When Taylor gets a job at Tuscon after she stops traveling, she says, "I lasted six days at the Burger Derby before I got in a fight with the manager and threw my...show more content... However, in the second sentence, Kingsolver reveals an informal tone by the way Taylor speaks. The way she talks to people is very informal. Because of this, we know that Kingston is purposely avoiding making Taylor a serious, somber character like she could've been. Another way that Kingsolver creates an informal tone is by the things Taylor does. "I lifted Estevan's hand from my ribcage and kissed his palm" (Kingsolver 189). This quote reveals an example of how Kingsolver establishes an informal tone through Taylor's actions. In this particular quote, Taylor falls asleep with Estevan on a couch. When she wakes up, she thinks about what Esperanza has been through, and makes a conscious decision to leave. Kingsolver could have simply stated, "I got off the couch and went to my own bed." However, she chose to create a more informal tone by showing what exactly Taylor did when she was getting off the couch. In this novel, The Bean Trees, by Barbara Kingsolver, a humorous – but more informal – tone is created by the sentence structure, characters' dialogue, and description of events. The tone was effective because it made the novel more interesting, and less dull. Also, it was easy to see that Kingsolver used lots of informality and humor in this novel, so that made the tone more noticeable. Because of the tone that Kingsolver created, the main character Taylor Greer was able to go through the negative events in her life a bit better than a more ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...
