  1. What are different types of patient simulators? Human Patient Simulator is a replica of the human body, generally made from plastic and metal. These simulators are constructed on mannequins and are devoid of any bony skeletal frame. Though it gained more popularity in the 1990s, the very first mannequin-based human simulator was developed in 1960 at the University of California to facilitate medical education and training.HPS for adults became available for commercial purposes from the early 1990s, but the first pediatric simulator got introduced in 1999. Benefits of using healthcare simulation A patient simulator can be considered a kind of mannequin that helps medical students and other health professionals study human anatomy. In the simulation centers, patient simulators are mostly used. These simulators come in a variety of models, starting from preterm infant models to geriatric patients. It also includes surgical simulators, birthing simulators, military simulators, etc. The main benefit of patient simulation is that it helps in improving medical education. With the help of clinical simulations, medical practitioners of all levels can improve their skills without harming their patients. The patient simulators are used in academic medical institutes, government research organizations, clinics, and military training centers to correctly train health practitioners. Types of simulators based on functions The level of realism of a mannequin is referred to as fidelity, and the patient's simulators are broadly classified into low, mid, and high-fidelity simulators. The degree to which a mannequin

  2. can replicate various physiological functions of a human body depends on the level of its fidelity. 1.Low fidelity mannequins: These simulators are static and straightforward models that help repetitive task training like catheter insertion. The silicon wounds on them enable the learners to change the dressings and also practice suturing. These mannequins are also widely used to train professionals on performing chest compressions and rescue breathing and making it easier for them to perform such treatments on real patients. 2.Mid fidelity mannequins: These mannequins are more complicated as it often comes with electrical components which mimic different functions of the body like cardiac and respiratory functions. These mannequins are used when the practitioner needs to learn to deal correctly with vital signs and are mainly used in introductory nursing courses. This helps the learners determine within what limits of some specific signs medicines need to be given. 3.High fidelity mannequins: These mannequins are highly specialized, as these are mainly designed to train healthcare practitioners on how to deal with military and other emergencies. Types of simulators based on features a.Pediatric simulator: A pediatric simulator is a mannequin representing a child's body and is considered the essential type of simulators as there is an immense difference between the clinical protocol of a child and an adult. This technology offers the learners with a wide range of pediatric skills to gain useful experience of problems regarding life- threatening pediatric issues. b.Endoscopy simulator: These simulators are used so that the medical practitioner can achieve a high-quality result in diagnostic, therapeutic procedures by reducing the risks to the patient. c.Laparoscopic simulator: Laparoscopic simulators improve the laparoscopic surgical skills of obstetrics and gynecology practitioners. This simulator also helps the trainees in evaluating and practicing before they practice on real patients. d.Brain surgery simulators or neurosurgery simulators: These simulators are more advanced and have a unique technology that helps in educating, practicing, and training neurosurgeons. Some neurosurgery simulators replicate the open neurosurgical process, including stereoscopic view and an operating room microscope ergonomics. e.Emergency simulators: These simulators help represent real-life emergencies and help health practitioners learn how to deal with them. These tools also help the emergency practitioner develop their skills in different procedures and perform treatments without risks.
