  1. WELCOME Please sign in at the table. Help your child find his/her desk. Please look around the room. I will do my best to meet everyone as quickly as possible. I will begin the PowerPoint presentation very soon.

  3. On your child’s desk is a folder with papers in it. Please take it home and return it when you can. • You have a copy of this PowerPoint. There are pencils on the desk if you need to take notes. • Please let me know how your child will get home from school by filling out the yellow form on your child’s desk. If you have any questions or comments please write them on the back of the yellow form. • Please leave the yellow paper on the desk when finished. • Your child can take home the bag. Thank you! 

  5. I graduated from The University of Alabama with a degree in Elementary and Early Childhood Education.

  6. This will make my 25th year to teach First Grade. I have taught in Alabama, Texas, Ohio and Jackson.

  7. My husband, Chad, and I live in Medina. We have 2 boys.

  8. Logan will be in 8th grade and Dylan will be in 6th grade. I will do my best to treat your child the same way I would want their teacher to treat them.

  9. If you need to reach me you can write a note in the planner, email me at dbrowning@gcssd.org, text me through the Remind App, or you can call or text me at 267-2767. During school hours I keep my phone on silent. You are welcome to text me, but I will be unable to respond until my break or until school is over. Please remember that I also have kids, and I may not be able to talk at night. The best way to contact me after school hours is by texting me. And, most importantly, please do not call or text on the weekends before 10 a.m.!!!

  10. Please sign up to receive texts from me. I will send them using the Remind 101 App. It is different from normal group texts because no one can respond. To sign up, send a text tothe number 81010 with the message @cf4ck7. (Be sure to put the @ sign.) This will be the best way to receive reminders and updates. You will be able to text me using this app.

  11. I have a closed Class Facebook page. I will post pictures of all the fun your child is having at school. The only people allowed to see the page will be people in the group. Please email me and ask me to add you. You are welcome to add grandparents and other family members. Just have them to email me, or you can send me their email address.

  12. Please check your child’s planner every day. I will check it for notes every morning. • If your child will go home a different way, please write it in the planner. • Please put lunch money, signed papers, or anythingelse in the planner pocket. • Your child will be responsible for checking the planner pocket in the front of the planner. • If your child is forgetful, you may want to write a note asking me to look in the planner pocket.

  13. Home Folder • Completed/non-graded papers and the homework sheet will be sent home daily in the home folder. Please check it every night. • If you return a note in the folder please make sure your child gives it to me. You can also write a note in the planner so we can get it. • Graded tests will be sent home in the Test Folder on Thursdays. (There are times that I may send the Test Folders home on Tuesday. If I do, I will send a message on the Remind App. • Please keep all papers at home and sign and return the Test Folder to school the following day.

  14. Our Classroom Rules are: • Be respectful. • Be prepared for class. • Listen and work quietly. • Follow all school rules. • Have fun!! **most important!

Rewards and Consequences: Purple- punch on punch card, praise, silent cheers Green- warning Yellow- miss 10 minutes of recess Red- miss 20 minutes of recess, no “Do Right” day if 3 reds in a 6 weeks period Black- miss all of recess, miss special activities, note and/or phone call home, or go to the office, no “Do Right” Day if 3 blacks in a 6 weeks period

  18. Cafeteria behavior: Student behavior will be monitored using red, yellow, and green cones: Red=no talking Yellow=whispering Green= talking is allowed. Students that don’t follow the cafeteria rules will receive a ticket. 1-2 tickets per 6 weeks = referral to teacher 3 tickets per 6 weeks = assigned silent lunch 4 or more tickets per 6 weeks = office referral

  19. Students can bring money to purchase ice cream. Ice cream costs 50 cents. Please try to send change or small bills. Students will be responsible keeping up with their own money. Please send in a Ziploc bag, or another small bag. They will get the ice cream before recess and take outside to recess.

  20. Students can bring a snack for the morning and the afternoon. PLEASE make sure the morning snack is something that is NOT MESSY and can be eaten quickly. All snacks must be peanut free. See the peanut free snack list on page 12 in the planner.

  21. Students must drink water during morning snack. They can drink from the water fountain, or you can send water in a cup that doesn’t spill. Students can bring a drink or water for afternoon snack.

  22. All money sent to school needs to be sent in an envelope or Ziploc bag labeled with your child’s name, amount, and what it is for.

  23. Please remember to send $20 to cover the cost of the planner and weekly reader.

  24. Please put your child’s name or initials on the supplies marked with a . Your child will also need the following: • 1-2 boxes of crayons • Another zipper pouch • Coloring book Please use a Sharpie to write names or initials. It would be very helpful to write initials on each crayon, marker, and glue stick.

  25. Your child will be required to enter his/ her lunch number when getting lunch. Their lunch number is the last four digits of their social security number. Please be sure your child knows this number. Doing so, will allow students to get through the line quicker, and have longer to eat their lunch. You can pay for lunch each day, or you can send enough money to cover one or two weeks. I suggest signing up for MySchoolBucks.com

  26. If your child would like to celebrate his/her birthday at school, they are welcome to do so. You can do it after lunch, or at 2:25. Please remember to send individually wrapped snacks. You can send the treats to school or you are welcome to come and celebrate with us! If your child wants to pass out invitations, every student in the class must get one. If it is an all girls or all boys party, then every boy or every girl must receive an invitation.

  27. Please listen to your child read every night. I plan to read with every child individually, several times a week, but anything you can do to help is greatly appreciated.

  28. Every week we will read four poems and/or songs. After we have read them all week, they will be sent home in a folder (poetry notebook). Students are always so excited about being able to read and/or sing the poems.

  29. During the week, your child will bring home several things to read. He/she will bring home the Journeys reading book, a leveled reader, and poetry notebook.

  30. I will send home a detailed newsletter/homework sheet every Monday. This sheet will have the words and skills we are learning for the week. (example on next slide) I will not send homework as busy work. However, if I notice your child having trouble learning the skill that was taught in class, I will send home an extra sheet to practice. I will also work with your child during small group to reinforce that skill. I know how busy evenings can be, so I will send very little homework. 

  31. I will read this test for the first 5 stories.

  32. Students complete this without any help. As the year goes by they will read sentences.

  33. You are allowed to walk your child to the classroom on the first day. After that, all 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade students must walk to the classroom without parents.

  34. Your child can come into the building as early as 7:00 a.m. Students will be supervised in the gym. • Breakfast is from 7:15 until 7:35. • Morning school is available that begins at 6:10am. To sign up for early school, please visit the gym. • Morning school WILL be available on the first day.

  35. SGCES Arrival Map Drop Off Pre-K All buses Enter Exit Cars must enter on the side closer to Hwy. 152. Drop off is at the back of the building.

  36. Car Rider Dismissal: • Students will come out the doors at the back of the building at 2:45. • Middle School dismisses at 2:50 and High School dismisses at 2:55. • If you are running late (after 3:05), your child will be waiting in the office. You will need to come into the office to pick up your child. • Middle & high school students will not be bussed to SGCES for car rider pickup. • If your first grader has a younger sibling, he/she will be picked up with the younger sibling. • Please get a car rider tag before you leave!

  38. If your child will go home a different way than they normally do, please send a note to school in the planner or call the school. You can text me during the day, but if I don’t respond then I didn’t see it. If I do see it I will respond. I cannot send them home a different way unless I have a note from you. When you send a note PLEASE be sure to tell your child to show it or give it to me.

  39. Attendance Policy • School begins at 7:45am. After 7:45am, students will be tardy. Parents must come in and sign children in at the office after 7:45am. • Every third tardy will count as one unexcused absence. • Tardy also includes picking your child up before 2:45pm or missing any part of the school day. • Students are allowed five parent notes throughout the school year. All other absences should have a doctor’s excuse. • Documentation (doctor’s note, dentist note, etc.) must be provided within five days of the absence. (This is new this year.)

  40. Allergies and Medications • Please let me know ASAP if your child has any kind of allergy. You will also need to fill out an Allergy Action Plan. • If your child has an epi-pen or will need to take medication during the school day, you will need to give medicines to the school nurse and fill out a Medication Authorization Form. • Foods distributed during class parties and birthday parties will need to follow the Safe Food list. The Safe Food list is located under the “Nurse” tab on our school website and is located in your child’s planner on page 12.

  45. Please leave the yellow paper and pencil on your child’s desk. You can take the folder home and return it. Don’t forget to grab a wish list item and take your child’s picture! I am looking forward to a great year! I will be glad to answer questions.
