Case studies, for example, helped us comprehend the link betweenthalidomideand congenitalmalformations and theuseofpropranololfor thetreatmentofinfant hemangiomas. Contd...

  6. Case reports can help clinicians develop ideas for future clinicalinvestigations, assessglobalconvergencesof systems-orientedmethods,andpersonalizeand individualizetherapiesinclinicalpractice. Inaddition, casereportsprovidea structurefor case- basedlearninginhealthcareeducationandmaymake cross-culturalcomparisonsofhealthcareeducationand MedicalCaseStudyReportWriting. Randomized controlled trials(Consolidated Standards of ReportingTrials,orCONSORT).

  7. Observationalstudies(StrengtheningtheReportingofObservationalStudiesin Epidemiology, orSTROBE), and systematic reviews and meta-analyses also have reportingcriteria. (PreferredReportingItemsforSystematicReviewsandMeta-Analyses,orPRISMA). Accordingtoempiricaldata, theadoptionoftheCONSORTdeclarationasa guidance to writers by a journal has been linked to an increase inthe completeness ofpublishedrandomizedtrials.

  8. Although rulesfor writing adverse-event Case StudyReportshave been published, there are no universal reporting requirements for case reports. Our main goal was to use a consensus- basedmethodtosetreportingrequirementsforcasereports.

  9. CONSENSUSPROCESS PHASE1: Theauthorsandthesteeringcommitteeexamined the literature for articles about the role of case reports, publication recommendations, andsurveysonreportingquality. Participants were asked what information was necessary to be includedincase-reportingcriteria.

  10. Whytheymadetheirproposals, andforreferencesthat supportedtheirargumentduringthetelephone conversation. Thesuggestionsbasedontheliterature review and interviews and their reasoning, references, and operational definitionsareorganizedbytheme.

  11. PHASE2: Clarifications, views, reasons, operational new ideas were all given definitions, and throughout the open debate of each prospective item. The committee had decided on a set of preliminary CaseReportWritingHelpsuggestionsatthe secondday'sconclusion.

  12. PHASE3: The steering committee modified the original checklist beforesendingittotheentiregroupfor two assessmentrounds(Phase1 and2participants). Thecommentsfromthe wholeCAREgroupwas integratedintotheapprovedreportingrequirements. 14. LIMITATIONS Medicaljournalsfrequentlyrequireauthors to address three problems, which are not included in our guidelines. (a) potential competing interests, (b) de-identification of patient-related data, and (c) ethics committee or InstitutionalReviewBoard(IRB)permission.

  15. CONCLUSION ClinicalCaseStudyReportWritinghasrelevance, especiallywiththe risingemphasis on customized care, as seen by the increase of case reports in an era where clinical trials and systematic reviews dominate thetablesofcontentofmedicaljournals. Unlikerandomized controlled trials, case reportsare individual accounts about the care of specific patients withasamplesizeofone.
