The Children Served (“Littles”) • At Risk: Identified to BBBS – need positive adult role model • 23,000 children served across Canada • 10,000 waiting to be matched • Boys wait longer than girls and can wait up to 2 years • Programs exists for children as young as 6 and up to 18 “As a former teacher and vice-principal of a Winnipeg elementary and middle school, I worked with hundreds of children every day…. Many of the kids had a history of challenging behaviour and found it difficult to fit in at school. The mentors had to work very hard to get inside the fortresses the kids had built around themselves….   7. Volunteers Do Make A Difference! Making a Difference: An impact study of Big Brothers Big Sisters. (Philadelphia:2000) • Little Brothers and Little Sisters were 46 percent less likely than controls to initiate drug use during the study period. • For every 100 youth in this age group who start to use drugs, only 54 similar youth who have a Big Brother or Big Sister will start using drugs. • Little Brothers and Little Sisters were 27 percent less likely than controls to initiate alcohol use during the study period. • Little Brothers and Little Sisters were almost one-third less likely than controls to hit someone. • Little Brothers and Little Sisters skipped half as many days of school as did control youth, felt more competent about doing schoolwork, skipped fewer classes and showed modest gains in their grade point averages.

You get to build model airplanes, toss around the football, play computer games, hang out…whatever! It’s about sharing a little time together – a few hours a week or every couple of weeks will make a big difference. You’ll see.

  10. Big Brothers Big Sisters Programs In-School Mentoring It’s a small commitment that makes a big difference. Become a mentor to a child in a school environment. You’ll help build a child’s self-esteem and school performance while having a lot of fun. And it only takes one hour a week during the school year. One child. One hour a week. One big reason to go back to school.

  11. Big Brothers Big Sisters Programs Other Programs Group Mentoring: Imagine a group of kids and adults baking, playing sports, going on picnics or doing crafts together. That’s Group Mentoring. We’ll plan the activities, all you have to do is show up once a week and enjoy spending time with a bunch of amazing kids. Go Girls! Healthy Minds Healthy Bodies: Go Girls! Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds is a program designed to address the physical activity, balanced eating and positive self-image needs of young women ages 12-14 based on a group mentoring model. The program consists of 7 mentoring sessions conducted over a 7-10 week period. Each session is 1.5-2 hours in length and is held after school, within school facilities.
