Here are the 3 interesting facts about Quipu: 1: Each of the Quipu knots is a digit, and there are 3 main types of knots: simple overhand knots; “long knots” consisting of an overhand knot with one or more additional turns; and figure of 8 knots. 2: The system was also used to get to keep track of the calendar. 3: Some of the knots, as well as other features such as color, are thought to represent non-numeric information, which has not been deciphered. It is generally thought that the system did not include phonetic symbols transferring information to letters in the alphabet. The QuipuBy: Naomi and Deven Quipu is pronounced KEE-poos. Also known as Khipu. Quipu is the Spanish spelling and themost common spelling in English.

How a Quipu is used • The Quipu are recording devices used in the Inca Empire • In the Inca Empire of South America the government kept of the numbers of people, products, taxes, etc., on sets of strings called Quipus. • Each Quipu had several strings of different colors, and knots on the strings indicated different quantities.
