Understanding Driver Fatigue: Risks and Prevention
Driver fatigue significantly increases the risk of accidents, especially from 10 PM to dawn. Tiredness can lead to slower reaction times and even microsleeps, where drivers lose consciousness briefly. Symptoms include yawning, grogginess, and difficulty concentrating, with warning signs like daydreaming and heavy eyelids. Prevention relies on sufficient sleep, hydration, and taking breaks every two hours during long drives. Alarmingly, 20% of crashes in America involve fatigued drivers, highlighting the critical need for awareness and safety measures against this persistent issue.

The risks of driver fatigue go up dramatically between 10:00 PM and dawn when people drive when they’re tired, drowsy, or sleepy. a major cause of car accidents What is it? cause drivers to have slower reaction times in extreme cases, a driver may actually fall into a microsleep, briefly losing consciousness on the road, and this can be extremely dangerous.
Symtoms of driving fatigue • These include feeling sleepy, groggy or exhausted, yawning, boredom, restlessness, and difficulty concentrating. • The driver's eyes may feel strained, sore or tired. Warning signs of driver fatigue include: • Daydreaming • Driving over the center line • Excessive yawning • Feeling impatient • Heavy eyes • Slow reactions • Stiffness.
How to prevent it • Sleep and rest is really the only cure for driving fatigue • Also, stay hydrated and avoid alcohol and any medication that causes drowsiness • When driving try and get as much fresh air as possible and take a break at least every 2 hours.
The statistics • In America, the National Sleep Foundation estimates that around 20% of crashes may involve fatigued drivers. 37% of drivers in a 2003 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration admitted that they had fallen asleep while driving. The risk of traffic accidents goes up at night due to a variety of factors, but fatigue is a major issue. • Last year in Mayo driver fatigue caused one in five fatal crashes on our roads.
The aim of this project was to show the dangers of driving fatigue
