  2. WHAT IS A CHARTER SCHOOL? In accordance with Maryland law, a Charter School is: • Nonsectarian and nondiscriminatory in its programs, policies and operations • A school of choice, open to all students on a space available basis • A program of elementary or secondary education or both • Tuition-free for all eligible students • In compliance with health, safety, state and local laws

WHAT IS A CHARTER SCHOOL CONT’D • In accordance with Maryland law, a Charter School: • Operates as part of the local school district • Staff are employees of the local school district • Unique to charter schools on Military Bases: • 65% of total available seats reserved for students with parents who are assigned to Joint Andrews Air force Base • 35% of available seats will be made available for students with parents who are not assigned to the base (i.e. civilian population)

WHO IS IMAGINE SCHOOLS? • Full-service charter school management organization founded in 2004 by social entrepreneurs Dennis and Eileen Bakke. • National organization consisting of over 72 schools in 12 states and DC serving close to 40,000 students. • Creates choice within the public school system • Provides accountability for results, • Encourages innovative public-private partnerships, • Encourages greater parental and community involvement

  5. WHO IS IMAGINE SCHOOLS (CONT’D)? • Imagine operates in a decentralized fashion. Imagine has 100 regional and national staff supporting the 72 schools – of those only 22 people are in the Arlington headquarters office. Imagine schools offer a variety of curricula and approaches – based on needs of the community. • ‘Six Measures of Excellence’ are used to evaluate school effectiveness. • School’s achievement on these measures is publicly reported annually. • Our work is guided by three shared values: integrity, justice, and fun.

  6. IMAGINE SCHOOLS- MARYLAND REGION Maryland Region is one of 13 Imagine Schools regions across the country. Operates three schools today and is expanding over the next two years Today • Currently operating two schools in Prince George’s County • Currently operating one school in Baltimore County Future • Approved two school in Prince George’s County – 2011 • Imagine Andrews PCS • Imagine Foundations • Approved school opening in Anne Arundel County- 2012

Imagine Andrews PCS - MISSION The mission of Imagine Andrews PCS (Imagine Andrews) will be to create a challenging learning environment for students in the Andrew’s community while addressing the specific needs of the military child. Through effective classroom instruction, students of Imagine Andrews will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to become successful students and responsible citizens. Imagine Andrews will strive to have parents, administrators, staff, and Joint Base Andrews collaboratively involved in the education process. Based on an environment of both challenge and support, Imagine Andrews will promote strong moral values, diversity, mutual respect, and responsibility for oneself and one’s community.

IMAGINE ANDREWS PCS AND JOINT BASE ANDREWS AIR FORCE BASE PARTNERSHIP • Imagine Andrews PCS is a collaborative partnership between Joint Base Andrews, Imagine Schools and Prince George’s County Public Schools. • Summer 2009: Clark Realty/Liberty Park approached Imagine Schools regarding the potential to start a Charter School Joint Base Andrews • Spring 2010: Base leadership worked with state legislation to amend existing charter law to set aside 65% of Imagine Andrews seats for the children of Joint Base Andrews that lives on base. • Summer 2010: Imagine Schools submitted application for Imagine Andrews K – 8 Charter school to Prince Georges County Public School • Fall 2010: Prince George’s County BOE approved the application. • Winter 2010: Fall 2011: Imagine Schools, Clark Realty/LP and Joint Base Andrews will work through operational logistics to accommodate a K-8 charter school on base. • Fall 2011: Imagine Andrews welcomes 260 students in grades Kindergarten to Grade 4. Each year a new grade level will be added until the school serves 560 students in grades K through Grade 8.

ENROLLMENT PROCESS Imagine School (Proposed) • If your child is NOT currently enrolled in a PGCPS school and has never been enrolled in a PGCPS school, you must go to your designated home school to obtain a student ID number. (if was enrolled at one time must be able to access student ID number) • Week of January 3rd, enrollment application will be available via www.imagineandrews.org. Complete application and return to (mail or email) to enrollment counselor (TBA). • Lottery Application Deadline – March 18th, 2011. • Lottery held on the week of March 21st (if applicable). Letters to be sent out that week as well. • If admitted through lottery will schedule day and time to register. Prince Georges County (Actual) • If your child is NOT currently enrolled in a PGCPS school and has never been enrolled in a PGCPS school, you must go to your designated home school to obtain a student ID number. (if was enrolled at one time must be able to access student ID number) • Week of January 3rd, go online to www1.pgcps.org/charters/ and complete lottery application (only choose Imagine Andrews) • Lottery Application Deadline – March 18th, 2011. • Lottery held on April 4, 2011 (if applicable) /Letters sent out by April 22nd. • Return placement letter by date determined by PGCPS. • Physically enroll child on site by date to be determined by school
