Pantomime Acting without words
Characterization • Placing a character in a situation • Showing thoughts through nonverbal expression • Nonverbal needs to come before verbal: http://youtu.be/GmerFuzRNZ4
Characterization • Imitation • Imagination • Hypothetical situation: • You have quarreled with your girlfriend or boyfriend. You are standing by a window, looking out, frowning, and biting your lip. Your chest is sunken; your body is slumped. The phone rings. Your face lights up. You run to the phone and lift the receiver. Let your face reflect the conversation. When you hang up, you show by your movements whether or not the quarrel is resolved.
Pantomime and Objects • Portraying the size, shape, weight, resistance, texture, placement, and condition of objects is an important part of pantomime. • Make evident the exact size of an object • Height, length, and width • Small object: hands • Large object: whole body • Extremely large objects: eye and head movements
Pantomime and Objects • Shape • Convey shape as you do size • Eyes, hands, and whole body • Difference between a large building and a rainbow?
Pantomime and Objects • Weight • Popcorn vs. Sugar • Muscular tension • Never let the audience have a vague notion of weight • Resistance • Firmness or solidity of an object • Example: How a balloon feels • Also involves the object’s resistance to your actions • Example: A balloon that doesn’t move
Pantomime and Objects • Texture • Rough or smooth? Jagged or rounded? Sandy? Pebbly? Prickly? • Concentrate on texture as you touch the object • Senses respond to what you’re touching • Velvet cushion vs. cactus • Placement • A table top, shelf, or a spot where you picked a flower needs to remain the same
