  3. Double Beta Decay without ν’s (0ν) - forbidden in SM, lepton number violation. So far not observed τ > 1025 yr Except one claim at 1025 yr level ⇒ <mν> ≈ 0.4 eV! a.k.a “Klapdor” claim with 2ν’s - allowed in Standard Model but still very rare Observed for 11 nuclei with τ ~ 1019-1021 yr For comparison the age of Universe is ~ 1010 yr. • IF 0ν observed • Neutrino identical to its anti-particle (Majorana particle) • Absolute ν mass measured • Origin of mass (not Higgs in case of ν?) • Origin of matter-antimatter asymmetry in Universe • Other new physics: SUSY, V+A, Majoron etc • Questions as fundamental as those addressed by LHC • Many can only be addressed by 0νββ 18-Sep-2012 HEP Group Day, SuperNEMO, R. What do we measure E1 E2 E1 E2 In reality smeared by energy resolution E1+E2 35 isotopes known in nature but only ~9 are experimentally feasible A few MeV energy scale The Challenge: • Go underground (cosmics) • Use shielding (external radioactivity) • Be clean (internal radioactivity) • Be smart (“intelligent” detector) It is all about backgrounds: 18-Sep-2012 HEP Group Day, SuperNEMO, R. The PhD project • Low background development - ultra-low level Radon detection • Rn concentration line and detector + data analysis ⇒ your own “table-top” experiment • Applicable to all low background physics (e.g. dark matter) • Or you can patent smth new and get rich. • Commercial Rn detector ~£30K. Every building checked according to environmental regulations • Demonstrator construction • Demonstrator data analysis. • First physics data in late 2014 • Reach programme - sensitive to controversial claim. Likely more than one isotope, decays to excited states, critical backgrounds characterisation. What’s different • Very experimental, build and run “your own” experiment and analyse “you own” data • Small collaboration.
