  1. Pythagoras Jacob Turner Mrs. Brady

  2. Life • Pythagoras – born in 570 b.c.e on Samos (island in the eastern Aegean) died in 495 b.c.e in Metapontum, Italy • Noted as a great Mathematician, Philosopher, and Scientist

  3. Life • During his early years he travelled widely, visiting Egypt and other places seeking information. • He founded Pythagoreanism, a religion with roots in math. • Called himself a philosopher and a lover of wisdom

  4. Life • Some of his discoveries are the Theory of Functional Significance of Numbers in the World and in Music, Pythagorean Theorem, Pythagorean Triples, and Pythagorean Identities.

  5. Life • Since no writings survived, it is hard to say if Pythagoras actually invented his works, if he stole them from someone else, or if his disciples created them hundreds of years later.

  6. Mathematical Contributions • These include the previous Pythagorean Triples, Pythagorean Identities, and most recognizably, the Pythagorean Theorem.

  7. Mathematical Contributions • In mathematics, the Pythagorean Theorem or Pythagoras' theorem is a relation among the three sides of a right triangle. It states: in any right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse is the sum of the squares of the legs (the two sides that meet at the right angle) • In equation form: a2 + b2 = c2

  8. Mathematical Contributions • It is suspected that Pythagoras stole this theory from Babylonian Mathematicians who stole it from Egyptians. A theory of how he came up with this is that he went to Egypt, where he studied with the people known as the "rope-stretchers". They held a very special secret in the form of a rope tied in a circle with 12 evenly spaced knots.  It turns out that if the rope was pegged to the ground in the dimensions of 3-4-5, a right triangle would form.

  9. Interesting Facts • He formulated principles that influenced Aristotle and Plato. • According to Pythagoras, 10 was the perfect number, so maybe he had a grasp of the metric system way before it was invented.

  10. Interesting Facts • He believed in the Transmigration of Souls (kind of like reincarnation). • Because of this, he considered eating animals was cannibalism, for they might contain the souls of humans. • He said that he had previous lives such as Euphorbus- son of Panthus, who fought in the Trojan War, a tradesman, and a courtesan
