  2. Using Nontraditional Methods and Technologies in the Classroom Showcasing Google Earth Moodle Screencast-O-Matic

  3. Overview on use of typical classroom methods and technologies. • Overview on use of less traditional methods and technologies. • Moodle • What is Moodle? • Why I selected to use Moodle. • Examples of how I use Moodle. • Google Earth • What is Google Earth? • Why I decided to use Google Earth. • Example of Google Earth Street View. • Examples of how students have used Google Earth. • Examples of how it could be used with teaching weather/climate and intro to landforms. • Further uses of Google Earth. • Screencast-O-Matic • What is Screencast-O-Matic? • Why I decided to use Screencast technology. • Examples of how Screencast is used in the classroom setting.

  4. Computer aided instruction gained widespread acceptance in schools by the early 1980's. Technology: the practical application of knowledge especially in a particular area. • Chalkboard / Dry Erase Board / Whiteboard • Overhead Projectors/Slide Projectors • TV / VCR / Film / DVD • The Room • Your Voice and Body • Computer Technology – Software Typical Examples • Word and PowerPoint • Excel and other spreadsheet/database programs

  5. Flipped Classroom: The Full Picture for Higher Education

  6. E-learning services have evolved since computers • were first used in education. • When instructors say they are using e-learning, • this most often refers to the use of technology as • classroom aids. • Two popular tools for E-learning are Blackboard Inc. and Moodle: • Blackboard Inc. has over 20 million users daily. Offering six different platforms: Blackboard Learn, Blackboard Collaborate, Blackboard Mobile, Blackboard Connect, Blackboard Transact, and Blackboard Analytics; Blackboard's tools allow educators to decide whether their program will be blended or fully online, asynchronous or synchronous. Blackboard can be used for K-12 education, Higher Education, Business, and Government collaboration • Moodle is an Open Source Course Management System. It is free to download and provides blended learning opportunities as well as platforms for distance learning courses. The Moodle website has many tutorials for creating a program or becoming a Moodle student.

  7. The word Moodle was originally an acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment, which is mostly useful to programmers and education theorists. • It's also a verb that describes the process of lazily meandering through something, doing things as it occurs to you to do them, an enjoyable tinkering that often leads to insight and creativity. • As such it applies both to the way Moodle was developed, and to the way a student or teacher might approach studying or teaching an online course. • Anyone who uses Moodle is a Moodler 

  8. Overview of Google Earth • Google Earth allows you to travel the world through a virtual globe and view satellite imagery, maps, terrain, 3D buildings, and much more. • With Google Earth's rich, geographical content, you are able to experience a more realistic view of the world. You can fly to your favorite place, search for businesses and even navigate through directions.

  9. Although the options within Google Earth are endless, here are a few things you can do: • Discover the Earth: Fly to any location in the world, learn about a city and it's geographic features, find local businesses, and create tours. • Explore the Sky: Enjoy the wonders of the heavens and learn about our solar system. • Dive in the Ocean: Go beneath the surface and visit the depths of the ocean and explore the planet's deepest underwater canyons. Learn about ocean observations, climate change, and endangered species. You can even discover new places to surf, dive and fish. • Walk on the Moon: Take tours of landing sites narrated by Apollo astronauts and view 3D models of landed spacecraft. • Visit Mars: Travel the Red Planet and explore NASA's latest imagery of our galactic neighbor. • Google Earth is simply your ticket to explore the Universe! Now, learn how to get started!

  14. A screencast is a digital recording of computer screen output, also known as a video screen capture, often containing audio narration. • Screencasts can help demonstrate and teach the use of software features. • Creating a screencast helps software developers show off their work. • Educators may also use screencasts as another means of integrating technology into the curriculum.

  15. The recent trend in the E-Learning sector is screencasting. • There are many screencasting tools available but the latest buzz is all about the web based screencasting tools which allow the users to create screencasts directly from their browser and make the video available online so that the viewers can stream the video directly. • The advantage of such tools is that it gives the presenter the ability to show his ideas and flow of thoughts rather than simply explain them, which may be more confusing when delivered via simple text instructions. • With the combination of video and audio, the expert can mimic the one on one experience of the classroom and deliver clear, complete instructions. • From the learner's point of view this provides the ability to pause and rewind and gives the learner the advantage of moving at their own pace, something a classroom cannot always offer.
