Christmas history • Celebration starts 4 weeks before Dec. 25th – Advent • Christmas Day is December 25th • Evergreen Christmas trees, like ivy and holly, symbolize • eternal life • Christmas markets originated in Austria in the Middle • Ages. They bring a holiday atmosphere to the city as they • wait for Christmas Day. • The winter solstice was celebrated because winter was • behind them and they could look forward to longer days • and extended hours of sunlight. After the birth of Jesus, • since an exact birth date was not known, his birth was • celebrated during that time of winter solstice, December.

  3. Traditional foods • Christmas day is spent feasting with the family. Fried Carp, Sacher torte, and Christmas cookies (lebkuchen and Sterne) are eaten. They also eat other chocolate desserts which include edible Christmas ornaments. • Christmas dinner is usually Goose, Ham served with Gluhwein, Rumpunsch, and chocolate mousse.

Every Sunday they light a candle and families get together to pray, sing, and share Christmas stories. • During Christmas people go to Austrian Christmas markets where shoppers are provided with presents, food, and sweet wines. Others provide decorations, art and crafts, toys, and jewelry. • The tinkling of a bell lets everyone know of the arrival of “Christ Child” in the room where the Christmas tree is located. • Gifts are placed under the Christmas tree and are opened after dinner on Christmas Eve. • ”Silent Night “ is a popular Christmas carol that cannot be played until Christmas Eve when it is played every 4 hours. • Families that live in the mountains go down to the valley on Christmas Eve while singing the whole way down.
