  2. Background • For students and researchers of IHLs • to increase the level of awareness of technopreneurship • Competition committee • UTM – Chair; • USM – Vice-Chair; • UKM - Member; • Universiti Malaysia Sabah - Member; • UPM - Member;

  3. Background • Aug 2004, 25 out of 200 ideas converted into business plans. • Finals day 1 - workshop to prepare finalists on business presentation. • Final day 2 - actual presentation of business plans. • panel of judges - Bank Pembangunan, MARA, IBM, Microsoft, and MAVCAP

  4. Background • The winners of 2004 competition : • Winners - Inovaseer, UTM • 1st Runners-up – Fiber Magnetic, UTM • 2nd Runners-up – ASIS, UPM • Merit Winners – High Performance Coating Technology, USM • Merit Winners – Excel Group, UPM

  5. Objectives • encourage culture of technopreneurship in IHLs • identify commercially viable ideas & compelling IP (Intellectual Property) for development into ICT SMEs.

  6. Objectives • provide exposure & knowledge of key competencies in becoming successful technopreneur. • encourage students & researchers from diverse backgrounds to share their business ideas, and form teams that leverage on both technology & business competencies.

  7. Scope of the Competition • Open to Business Ideas and Business Plans that focus on Information & Communications Technology (ICT) and Bioinformatics only. • Participants (undergraduate students, postgraduate students, researchers, academic & non-academic personnel) may, however, be from any disciplines.

The 2004 Competition and Commercialisation • 2 of the 3 winners in 2004 had been inducted into the Start-up Development Programme • commercialization process will take a longer time due to the academic commitments of the members of the winning teams. • Nevertheless, they have thus far benefited fromthe Business Plan Development and Business Assessment & Advisory services.

  10. Competition 2005Categories • Business Idea Category • targeted at undergraduate students • ideas not yet been developed into a prototype or product. Undergraduate students • who happen to have prototypes and / or products must opt for the Business Plan category.

The Prizes • The MSC-IHL Business Plan Competition Challenge Trophy • sponsored by MDC • The Challenge Trophy is awarded to each year’s winner and is held for a year, after which it is passed on to the following year’s winner. • The MSC-IHL Business Plan Competition Challenge Trophy for 2004 was won by UTM

  20. Competition 2005 Process& Timelines Entrepreneurship Lab (E-Lab) • To impart knowledge of the key success factors for technopreneurship and for the creation of a successful ICT business. • To impart knowledge on how to develop a Business Plan.

Competition 2005 Process& Timelines E-Lab is a 1-day event focuses on: • Technopreneurship as an alternative to a professional career. • The key success factors for creating a successful ICT business. • Market & technology trends. • Business Model. • Go-To-Market Model. • Sales & Marketing Strategies and Plans. • Financial Projections. • Funding Requirements & Strategies.

Competition 2005 Process& Timelines Actual Submission Dates for the Pre Qualification Actual dates for the submission of Business Ideas and Business Plans for the Participating IHLs will be notified by eMail and post. Notifications will also be posted on the www.technopreneurs.net.my website.

  24. Competition 2005 Process& Timelines Finals and Awards Presentation Ceremony The actual dates for the two-day event will be determined and announced at a later date. Participating IHLs will be notified by eMail and post. Notifications will also be posted on the www.technopreneurs.net.my website.

  25. Competition 2005 Process& Timelines Location of the Finals The staging of the Finals of the MSC-IHL Business Plan Competition 2005 will be either in Putrajaya or Cyberjaya. Actual location and actual dates will be determined at a later stage. IHLs and participants will be notified by eMail and information will be posted on www.technopreneurs.net.my

  28. Guidelines • How to Enter • must register your IHL’s participation by 31 October, 2005. • The Competition organizer within your IHL will act as the liaison with the Competition Organizing Committee. • Participation in the Competition by individuals and teams must be under the auspices of their respective IHLs. • There is NO FEE required to be paid to participation in the Competition.

  29. Guidelines • Confidentiality and Intellectual Property Guidelines • The participating teams and their respective IHLs will retain all rights to their Business Ideas, Business Plans and / or Intellectual Properties.

  30. Guidelines • Copies of Business Ideas and Business Plans submitted for the Pre Qualification and Finals phases of the Competition will be kept strictly confidential by MDC and all judges on the judging panel.

  31. Guidelines • Oral presentations and Q&A sessions during the Finals are open to MDC, the organizers, fellow participants and invited guests during the Finals. As such, MDC, the organizers and the panel of judges shall not be held responsible for any information discussed or revealed during the Finals that will likely to enter the public domain

Guidelines • Eligibility • All Business Idea and Business Plan submissions must be in the areas ICT or bioinformatics. • The MSC-IHL Business Plan Competition is open to all full-time undergraduate students, postgraduate students, researchers, academic and non-academic personnel of all public and private IHLs.

  33. Guidelines • Partnering with a foreign researcher or student is allowed as long as 70% of the team composition, production and ownership of the Business Idea or Business Plan is local. • Adjunct Professors or Visiting Professors are not allowed to participate.

  34. Guidelines • Participating teams must consist of members who are enrolled or employed by the IHL for the entire duration of this year’s competition from October 2005 through to March 2006. If for any reason a team member is not registered, resigns, or terminates his or her enrolment or employment contract with the IHL at any time during the competition, that team member will automatically be disqualified from further participating in the competition. However, this does not necessarily disqualify the entire team.

  35. Guidelines • Team Composition • Business Idea category All teams must be composed of up to three (3) undergraduate students only. • Business Plan category Teams can be composed of any combination postgraduate students, researchers, academic and non-academic personnel.

Guidelines • Business Idea and Business Plan Submission Guidelines • must be in accordance with the MSC-IHL Business Idea and MSC-IHL Business Plan templates provided at www.technopreneurs.net.my. • All submissions must be in softcopy format in either Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat PDF formats, according to the following document settings:

Guidelines • Paper size: A4. • Paper orientation: Portrait (except where the inclusion of tables and • graphs necessitate the landscape format). • Margins: Top and Bottom at 1 inch, Left and Right at 1.25 inches. • Font type: Arial. • Font Size: size 11 (headings may be of a bigger font size). • Line spacing: Single. • All submissions must be made to bizplan@technopreneurs.net.my. • Submissions must adhere to timelines as per Process & Timelines above.

  38. Guidelines • Business Presentation Guidelines at the Finals • Each team will be given 20 minutes to present its Business Idea or Business Plan. This will be followed by a 10-minute Q&A session between the team and the panel of judges

  39. Guidelines • Time limits will be strictly enforced. During the team presentation, the presentingteam will be alerted five (5) minutes and one (1) minute before the end of the allocated time of twenty (20) minutes.

  40. Guidelines • All members of the team are encouraged to participate in the formal presentation of the Business Idea or Business Plan and the Q&A session that follows. This demonstrates teamwork and appropriate allocation of focus areas of expertise

  41. Guidelines • The presentation room will be set up with the following equipment:- • 1 LCD Projector • 1 Flipchart • 1 Microphone • 1 Whiteboard

  42. Guidelines • Teams presenting their Business Plans are allowed to demonstrate their prototype or product. However, this must be communicated to the organizers prior to the presentation day. All equipment and props required for the demonstration must be provided by the team. (continue…)

Guidelines (..continue) All equipment and props must be set up and dismantled within the allocated timeframe of twenty (20) minutes for the presentation if the demonstration is set up on the same day of the presentation. If the demonstration is set up a day before the presentation day the equipment and props must not impede the general proceedings of the Finals and presentations by other teams.

  44. Guidelines • All teams participating in the Finals are allowed to observe all Business Presentations and Q&A sessions during the Finals. • All Business Presentations are required to be in Microsoft Powerpoint format downloadable from www.technopreneurs.net.my. • Business Presentation Guidelines can be downloaded from www.technopreneurs.net.my.

  45. Guidelines • Language Medium Used • English shall be language used for all aspects of the Competition, including for the submission of Business Ideas and Business Plan and all presentations at the Finals.

  46. Guidelines • Disqualification • The Competition Organizing Committee reserves the right to disqualify any teams that do not adhere to these guidelines. • Templates and other Documents for Download • All templates and documents for downloading are available at www.technopreneurs.net.my.
