  2. Chapter 33, Title 38Effective August 1,2009 • Optional participation in the MGIB • No monetary contribution required • 36 months of full-time education benefits • Benefits expire 15 years after separation from active duty.

  3. Basic Eligibility Requirements • Active duty on or after September 11, 2001 • Service time is calculated on an aggregate basis • Minimum of 90 days on active duty to be eligible. **Must not have utilized all benefits under either Chapter 30, 107, 1606 or 1607.

  4. AMOUNT of ASSISTANCE • POST 9/11 Era eligible only (ON Active Duty since SEPTEMBER 11, 2001) • Effective 8/01/09 - Serves 36 months* = 100% of benefits. - At least 30 months, but less than 36 months* = 90% - At least 24 months, but less than 30 months* = 80% - At least 18 months, but less than 24 months* = 70% - At least 12 months, but less than 18 months* = 60% - At least 6 months, but less than 12 months* = 50% - At least 90 days, but less than 6 months* = 40% *Aggregate of months served after Sept 11, 2001.

MONETARY AMOUNTS • Tuition – Payments are made directly to the educational institution • May not exceed maximum amount of established charges regularly charged in-State students for full-time pursuit of approved programs of education for undergraduates by the public institution of higher education • Monthly Stipend – not to exceed $1000 • Monthly housing stipend • Lump sum amount for books

  6. AUTHORITY TO TRANSFER BENEFITS • Eligibility – • Active duty for at least six years. • Agrees to remain on active duty another 4 years. • Transferable to: • Individual’s spouse • To one or more individual’s children • To a combination of the individuals above • Limitation of months • Not yet determined by the Secretary of Defense.
