  2. Biography • born in 1711 in Dubrovnik, Republic of Ragusa as one of eight children in the family • studied and lived in Italy and France where he published many of his works • made many important contributions to astronomy and is famous for his atomic theory

  3. Croatian – Italian physicist, mathematician, diplomat, theologist, astronomer, poet, polymath and Jesuit in 1740 he became a professor of mathematics a priest and a member of the Society of Jesus

  4. Mathematics • gave a considerable number of theorems in trigonometry in his work “Elementa matheseos universae” (1754) • in his discussion “De aestu maris” (1747) Ruđer proposed geometry with three or more spacial and one temporal size, which is used today!

  5. Astronomy • Ruđer published five books under the name “Opera pertinentia ad opticam et astronomiam” (1785) in which he lays out his theory of the aberration of light • founded practical astronomy and determined the height of troposphere • First pointed out the need to examine the errors of measuring instruments

  6. The troposphere is the lowest portion of Earth's atmosphere.

  7. Geodesy • 1741 - presented the idea of geoid as the shape of the Earth • 1750 - measuring of the meridian arch alongside Christopher Maire

  8. Atomic theory and theory of forces • Matter is composed of the same factors, but different laws make it different • Bošković stated that as the distance between physical objects diminishes, attraction is replaced by a repulsive force later further investigated by Michael Faraday

  9. Other works • He published a total of 22 scientific dissertations • Numerous publications • He was also well known as an engineer, poet and diplomat • As a diplomat he went to London in order to smooth out the tensions between Great Britain and Dubrovnik

  10. In 1742 he was consulted by Pope Benedict XIV to secure the stability of the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica

  11. Legacy • Bošković has his own crater on the moon • the largest Croatian institute of natural sciences and technology in Zagreb is named after him
