  1. Greenways Gladiators Chess Club ATTACK ALWAYS ATTACK!!

  2. Setup and Getting Started • Light square in lower right-hand corner of the chess board • Queen on Color (black on black, etc.) • White always plays first. Put a pawn of each color in different hands. Have opponent pick a color. Get started.

  3. Pieces and Movements • Pawns: Weakest members of your team. Can move forward only, and can kill diagonally only. Pawns can move two spaces their very first move, but only one space after that move. • If you are able to get your pawn all the way to your opponents back row you can replace that pawn with any piece, including a second Queen!

  4. Pieces and Movements • Castles: Can move forward, backward, and sideways as far as space allows or until killing an opponent, taking that place. • Knights: Move any direction two spaces and then one space to either side. If there is an opponent in the final space that piece is captured and the Knight takes its place. The Knight is the only piece that can jump!

  5. Pieces and Movements • Bishops: Move diagonally as far as space allows or until killing an opponent, taking that place. Note that you have a Black Square Bishop and a Red Square Bishop. They stay on that color the entire game! • Queen:Most powerful player. Moves all directions as far as open or until killing an opponent. DO NOT LOSE YOUR QUEEN!

  6. Pieces and Movements • King: You are the King. If the King is captured or Surrenders, you lose the game. You can move one space in any direction. • The King can not be killed. If you put your opponents King in a position of being killed you must state “CHECK.” • Once “Check” has been called the King must get “out of check.” This can be accomplished one of three ways:

Getting out of “Check” • You can move your King to a space that is not in “Check.” • You can move another of your pieces in between your King and the threatening piece of your opponent, thus possibly sacrificing that piece. • You can kill the threatening piece. (Remember: Attack, Attack, Attack!)

  8. How Do I Win? • Place your opponent’s King in Checkmate, meaning he can’t move in any direction without moving into “Check”. Once you have the King trapped like this you can proclaim “Checkmate,” and your opponent tips his King to surrender to you, the stronger player. • You can also get your opponent to “Surrender,” meaning he feels he has no chance to win so he gives up rather than sacrificing all his supporters.

  9. Special Moves!! • Getting your Pawn to your opponent’s back row is huge!! You then get to add another Queen or any piece you want except for another King or Pawn. • Castling is a defensive maneuver that can occur only one time per player per game. Players may “Castle” if they feel that their opponent is dominating the middle of the Board, thus putting their King in jeopardy.

  10. CASTLING • In order to use the “Castling” maneuver three criteria must be met: • There can be no pieces between the King and the Castle • King and Castle must be in their original positions • The King can not be in “Check,” nor can he “Castle” into “Check.”

  11. Final Rules and Thoughts • Most experts agree that it’s best to try and control the “Middle of the Battlefield.” • Once you touch a piece you must move that piece. Don’t touch until ready to commit. • Chess is a “Quiet Game.” Keep it down. • Light square in lower right. Queen on Color. White goes first. • Attack: Always, Always, ATTACK!!
