  1. The Love Canal Shouldn’t Have Happened By: Lia, B. & Sloane G.

  2. Introduction “Welcome to the Love Canal, known to be a dream community…NOT! Wondering why? Well, the Love Canal didn’t turn out to be that “dream community,” like William. T. Love expected. He thought that digging a mile long ditch joining the upper & lower Niagara Rivers would be a walk in the park. But he was wrong! Due to funding cuts, they had to postpone the dig that they never got back to! So, a couple years later a company called Hooker Chemical saw an opportunity for a new chemical dump-site!

  3. Effects On Birth Defects • One way birth defects were effective, was because when the babies were born, the babies could die instantly after birth, deformed ears and arms, longer legs, arms, hands, feet, etc. Also, some of the babies were not born with a top or bottom lip. • A way the birth defects were happening, because when the chemicals & toxins were flowing, they got into the mother’s bodies and it caused/effected the babies to have extra things added to there bodies and so on.

  4. Living With The Chemicals • Chemicals are bad for your body. So, when chemicals invade your home you should get out of there likity split, but the residence of the Love Canal did not know so they…got SICK! • That wasn’t all of it. There people living there might not have known this but the chemicals were running underground or in there basement. That was causing weird smells, problems with the pipes, and leaks. That also, caused the people to move out of the “dream community.”

  5. Lois Gibbs says “Everyone Evacuate” • “Get out, quick!” Exclaimed a mother of two children, one was a 10-year old boy & a 9- year old girl. But It was to late. As, the kids are all over the place, Lois Gibbs, mother of two, managed to get there kids out. She was that kind of person that would want to take charge in a serious situation. • Lois Gibbs, had that kind of charm she was nice, kind, and cared about everyone but her. She really wanted to make a change. She tried to have everyone be evacuated, it was good start but not everyone was evacuated. Only pregnant women and children under the age of two. Then after awhile (this story has a happy ending) they cleaned it up and everyone who wanted to live there, got to.

  6. Did You Know? • Why? I ask myself? Did you know, that the more chemicals that flow in, the more birth defects there are. Birth defects are horrible! Imagine the babies being born, and how bad the mothers feel for their child? This is probably the worst thing that could possibly happen… to a city. Just think how you would feel for yourself & the people. Imagine if the world had no chemicals that would be nice!

  7. A Call To Action One way you could do this is to pay attention to the factories that might be nearby your home and make sure they are not polluting. Another thing you could do would be to make sure they deposit chemicals correctly. Finally, check to make sure that there is not a rise in birth defects in the area. Please keep an eye out!
