Effective Adult Learning A gift for Christian Greer
What adults are thinking.. How does this relate to my job? I Have Experience to Share! I don’t think I need this yet. This instructor doesn’t care about this topic… This is so boring! This isn’t how we did this at my last job. I’m lost! It must be pilling up at the office. when they attend Class.
So you want to reach adults? Remember the 4 – Is
Involve Me! • Adults want to actively participate in their training • They want practice, practice, practice • Adults want to feel ownership in their training • Ask them questions. They want to share!
Respect me as an individual! • Consider the persons feelings, values, attitudes, and expectations • Provide an atmosphere that is nonthreatening and free of embarrassment • Consider the past experiences of the adult learners • Empower and trust the learner to control their own learning
My training needs to meet an immediate need! • Learning needs to be timely – not too soon, not too late • Training should be relevant to a student’s current job • Only train on what is necessary

I want training that is interactive! • Adults love group activities and projects • Keep the learning fun and social • Look for ways to get everyone involved • Allow adults to learn from each other • Adults need to receive and give feedback
