  1. History of Film By Noah

  2. Cheesy line • The history of film is an account of the historical development of the medium known variously as cinema, motion pictures, film, or the movies. • It’s about making stuff is the point I’m trying to get across I guess.

  3. History • The history of film spans over 100 years, from the latter part of the 19th century to the present day.

  4. Inventor • The cinema was invented during the 1890's by Lumiere brothers and Georges Melie.

  5. forms • Mostly silent films and science fiction.

  6. Three stages of filmmaking • Development • Pre-Production • -Producton

  7. A Trip to the Moon • A silent film from 1902 and the first film ever made.

  8. Director/Actors • Georges Méliès-director • Victor André-actor • Bleuette Bernon-actor • Jeanne d'Alcy-actor • Henri Delannoy-actor

  9. Plot • At a meeting of astronomers, their president proposes a trip to the Moon. Hence the name a “A Trip to the Moon”.

  10. Plot • After addressing some dissent, six brave astronomers agree to the plan. They build a space capsule in the shape of a bullet, and a huge cannon to shoot it into space.

  11. Plot • The astronomers embark and their capsule is fired from the cannon with the help of "marines", most of whom are portrayed as a bevy of beautiful women in sailors' outfits, while the rest are men. The Man in the Moon watches the capsule as it approaches, and it hits him in the eye.

  12. Plot…..still • Landing safely on the Moon, the astronomers get out of the capsule and watch the Earth rise in the distance. Exhausted by their journey, the astronomers unroll their blankets and sleep.

  13. Plot….As boring as this is, it will all be over soon. • As they sleep, a comet passes, the Big Dipper appears with human faces peering out of each star, old Saturn leans out of a window in his ringed planet, and Phoebe, goddess of the Moon, appears seated in a crescent-moon swing. Phoebe calls down a snowfall that awakens the astronomers.

  14. Plot • They seek shelter in a cavern and discover giant mushrooms. One astronomer opens his umbrella; it promptly takes root and turns into a giant mushroom itself.

  15. Plot • If you want to know the rest there’s a link at the last slide.

  16. Colored version • A hand-colored print, the only one known to survive, was rediscovered in 1993 by the Filmoteca de Catalunya.

  17. Lost Ending • The ending sequence of the parade and statue was considered lost until 2002, when a well preserved complete print was discovered at a barn in France. The extended version was screened at the Pordenone Silent Film Festival in 2003.
